Howdy all, just giving a wave from Australia. Young bloke starting cropping, with a view to prime lamb produce, with some chickens thrown in for good measure. All small gear, made by myself, building a new direct drill seeder at present. Have had Ford 8000, MB Trac 900 Turbo, David Brown 880E, David Brown 880 Selectematic & Case 580SLE.

Working on smaller gear now as they are easy to transport around, easier to repair, cheaper to run and the sooner it has 10K plus hours the sooner i get another machine :22:

Anyway looking forward to learning a lot of what goes on across the pond

Hey mate welcome to the forum, For a bloke just starting you have a bit of machinery.
We are all small time farmers really , I watched top gear the other night and the poms had come over here and they went onto a farm in the northern territory and it was 2 million acres.
Good on ya for havin a crack , most young blokes that want to farm just end up as station hands or moleskin managers.

Ant, this year I am putting in lampton oats, vetch and some annual ryegrasses. It really depends on how much more land I can get hold of, Building a new seeder currently so that should be ready to go next week to start seeding.

These dryish conditions are making it tough to get a lot of crop in.

I am facing the prospect of not getting some crop in because of too wet...had another 20mm now they saying Tuesday we could get a heap...I hope old mates Great Plains and JD can float on air..I pulled up at the lease block tonite because too wet..only just made it out of paddock while discing..going to be a nightmare trying to do some levelling work...looks like this flex front might get put to use in these beans...I love harvesting with flex fronts...it's great fun...FML...

Do u use a contract harvester Alex?

Aussie..I will probably be leaving the 7720 club sadly...hopefully anyway...

Fair enough we all want to update what ya thinkin of getting ??
If you have a finger/tine reel or front for the 7720 let me know might be handy when oats go down. I run a 224 bat , wouldn't want much bigger in these hills.

Ant, hows the seed going into the ground? I see you are getting a contractor to run the seed in, what breeds are going in?

Do you split your fertiliser inputs over the season or run them in at seeding time?

Gday Gav having a good season up north?
Can't complain. Summer crops are yielding exceptional. But it is quite dry. Some guys are holding off sowing dry land until another rain event comes through. But for us we are busy picking cotton and finishing some late corn.
How is the season working out for yourself.

Alex..I hav Rana faba beans going in this year, contractor with Great Plains will do some and I will do the rest with MF80 combine. With faba's all the fert is up front however if I need to do a fungicide it will get a foliar brew. For wheat and barley it's split..because of the wet I give a fair dose at seeding and maybe top up before can't get on paddocks..however this year and last year that's pretty much as soon as crops seeded.

I hope to start early next week...should have it done by that Friday...I did want to sow the faba's later but it's a huge gamble down here with the weather...June 1st is the target...the latest sown this year will be 25th may..so close...

I will decide on more lease ground late next week and may have some spring barley this year using hindmarsh...

Ant how do you get to find other ground to rent, having trouble finding more ground? I have tried landmark real estate agents in the area and a shearer who does go to quite a few places but cannot seem to get a start with many places..

Cheers Alex

I have been helping on a spud farm, with digging as well as seeding, irrigation and stock work. Some grass seed has struck already, hopefully this break in the rain will let us get more in, as well as setting up my own ground ready for oats.

This rain is really going to get our season started down here, paddocks are greening up a bit, but with two days at 6 deg C there is next to no substantial growth
