I recently just upgraded from a Landoll 5530 30' to a CIH 500t 30' disc air drill and I have to admit its using up a few more hp's then I expected. I'm pulling it with a TG 245 (2600hrs) w/ front and rear duals. We had a custom built rear hitch added to allow us to pull our packer for single pass applications. My intentions are to plant at a constant 7mph speed, but once I have a slight grade to climb I can hardly stay above 5mph. So to the point of my post I'm thinking about having a custom tune done to the tractor to gain the needed 50hp. Does anyone have experience with custom hp tunes? As in the past on our 8_70 series it was always just a quick screw driver to the pump for hp… Should I be wary of hp upgrade or is this a safe and reliable option?

safe, reliable.... Ya, it can be. Possibly even a benefit it they can remove some of emissions junk that restricts exhaust or recirculates it. But, I don't know anything about the TG245. My biggest concern would be if the powertrain can handle it. If the 245 is the smaller in it's frame size, I wouldn't be to worried. If it is the largest one, I would be a bit worried. This is assuming one frame size uses the same powertrain.

Here is some useless information I recorded while sitting bored one day while waiting for more seed to finish planting the last of the wet spots this spring.

These engine power percentages are from a 600 HP Quad Trac while sitting still. As you can see this one takes 120 HP before it even moves. I think you need a bigger tractor if you want to go faster.

Engine power % :
Idling 2%
Full throttle 10%
Full throttle openers engaged 10% !!!
Full throttle opener and fans 20%

I don't think I'll need to go the way of a larger tractor (atleast I hope not) as many other producers are funning smaller 200hp tractors but aren't pulling a packer. I'm hoping since the TG245 -TG305 run the same power train with the 8.3 cummins, that I can tweak a safe 50hp out of it. Monday I've got a tuner and dyno coming to our shop, so I'll have to keep everyone posted.
