I just bought a really nice 1420 with the 125 hp engine. I have a good buddy who is a JD guy who has been looking for a 6600. Now that I have the 1420 he has decided to look for a 6620, telling me that a 6620 would run circles around my little 1420. I told him that I hope he has fun doing it as I don't really care. He is one of those guys that always has a reason why a particular piece of JD equipment is better than it's IH counterpart even if he has to invent a reason why.

My question is if these two machines were pushing the same size heads in the same crop how would they perform compared to each other. I kind of figured they were in the same ballpark but he is telling me that a 1420 has no chance of working with a 6620. I don't have a lot of combine experience to debate with.

Isn't a 6620 more comparable to a 1460? I don't have any experience with either machine, but I'd think a 6620 would out-cut a 1420.

I ran a IH 1480 in the same field as a JD 8820, both were pretty even in good thrashing wheat, the 8820 had a little more capacity in the mornings and evenings, the 1480 had a little more in the heat of the day. Same with soybeans. Corn was a little differant, the 1480 could out-do the 8820 in almost all conditions.
I'm only guessing, but I'd bet a 1460 is close to a 7720, and a 1440 is close to a 6620,,, but I have no experience with either. Also no experience with a 1420.
Operator and machine set up will also be a huge factor

I had a 1420 that we just traded on a late model 1660. I was running a 17 1/2 1020 grain head on it and i kno i coulda beat an old 6620

I don't think you will have a chance aginst a late 6620, they had a 466. A stock 1420 will run 20ft of beans at 3 mph and 4 rows of 200bu corn at about the same speed. You may need to swap the clean grain elevator drive pulleys top to bottom in very good corn. Now if you want to scare that JD, turbo that 1420, you will gain over a mph on those speeds. TORQUE

Put a 300 hp 5.9l out of a wrecked dodge pickup in the 1420 and you will kick that old jd.

I replaced a 190hp 5,9l in a small grain truck with a 300hp engine, I was passing up everyone at the elevator until my ring gear exploded from the extra torque. I blew parts threw the cover. The tow truck guy said he never seen anything like that before.

I put a heavier rear axle in it and I am good to go.
