We have a Gleaner L3 with the big engine and hydrostatic. Last fall the engine threw a rod so this summer we replaced it with an engine from a L2. Now there is a vibration that is rather pronounced at 1700 RPM. I did replace the oil seal on the flywheel and change the harmonic balancer to the four groove model from the old L3 engine.

Any suggestions -- Thanks for your help

Can't say I blame you for wanting the engine to stay together,,, I had to swap one out in the field once,, what a pain in the butt,, oh almost forgot EXPENSIVE! I guess you didn't notice if there was a vibration while the engine was in the old machine? I'm also guessing the old engine didn't have this vibration?

A long shot... The only time we had an engine vibration it was caused by dirt buildup in the flywheel cavity behind the PTO drive plate.. but it sounds as if you were already in there if you replaced a bearing. Can't imagine why there would be a pilot bearing in the flywheel unless that engine or flywheel was originally in a tractor.

I did not use an indicator when I bolted the dampening disc to the flywheel. Didn't seem to be any play in the bolts either. The bearing in the flywheel centers the shaft on the flywheel but it did look like the shaft rubbed on the flywheel once upon a time -- probably why the bearing was installed. I did check the flywheel with an indicator.

Should I remove the bearing and indicate the shaft?

Good suggestion -- Thanks

Thanks -- but I tried that and it appears to be in the engine. I was a little concerned about running the charge pressure to the hydro with the belt off so I didn't run it long but the vibration was still there. Is it possible that the main idler could pull the belt off center enough to cause a vibration? Also the parts book doesn't show a bearing in the flywheel but there was one there that I replaced as long as it was apart.

Keep the suggestions coming -- I want this engine to stay together!
