We have about 2 fields of wheat that is down fairly bad (~50%). It is red wheat, the white wheat is not bothered; the person spreading eurea 46-0-0 did not cut back the rate for the red wheat! I was wondering if it is better to cut with the floating cutter bar or keep the header table locked in the up position and try to "skim" the ground the best I can. I have a 1660 with a 20 foot 1020 header.

I would put on SCH crop lifters. http://www.schumacherlc.com/products.htm
Check around, they come in different colors, Westward parts sells something almost identical.
In my opinion these are the best. It's amazing what they will lift, even going the same direction as the downed crop with a bat reel, you can still do a good job.

I would recommend it as it costs you nothing. Had the same problem a couple of years ago with a crop of oats, 80% flat, let the knife float and turned on the auto header height, it worked a lot better than rigid. If that doesn't suit you then the lifters are the next option.
