Looking at a 2012 Mack Granite w/ 505 hp MP8 and 18 speed. Would be mounting a Cancade 17 bale deck and grain/silage box.

Never had anything to do with Mack before and the newest truck on the place is a mid 90s Pete. Have most every breed on the place and no preference. Haven't even had anything to do with DEF yet. Will be a bit of a learning curve.

What should I know? Good, bad and definitely would like to hear the ugly.

Used 2012 MACK Granite For Sale | Edmonton AB

Thanks.

Man I wonder what they were hauling in that thing, gold bars? Looks awfully heavy speced for that van body. Looks like overkill for what you are wanting to do but go big or go home is what I say, no such thing as too much power! ;)

Never owned a Mack truck but I drove one a bit on beet harvest when I was in college, was still solid and no rattles like the corn binder I normally drove, they got my thumbs up, anything that takes the abuse of a beet truck and is still tight after a couple seasons is pretty impressive

Hi SW.

Not sure what he was hauling. Traded it on a tandem van so maybe was a bit overkill.

After having 425 hp in a tandem silage truck I'd have to agree with you.

If the bales are more than 14-1500# I'd be over weight on a tandem. And my plan for down the road is to pull a quad wagon grain trailer. Definitely not in the budget now. Just want to keep that door open as my super B has seen better days. Washed it the other day and now I have a few more holes to fill.

A tri-drive pulling a quad wagon lets me gross 61,300 kg.

Just musing over the truck setup as it looks impressive, if I had to guess I would say oil field hazardous goods of all sorts with four placards capable of fitting on each side/end, the sleeper unit and a tridrive to not only carry the weight of it but being capable on crappy roads. It certainly looks like a really nice unit to put a large box on but I know zero about those trucks.

sounds perfect! Love the maxi-torque 18spd! The granny gear is great if you hafta start out in a soft spot n the hi/low switch for every gear is nice. Ive never drove or heard of a truck that was specd to heavy or that had to much power

I have had lots of frustration with mine when it comes to the emissions system. Bought it November and I have probably close to 9 grand trying to keep it running. When I first got it, the "hydro carbon dosing after treatment module" kept throwing codes. They would only last about 2500km's before they would need replacement. Went through about 4 of those, @ $550 a piece plus 4 hours of driving to a dealer to pick one up. Then just over a month ago the truck had a full page of codes come up and it derated. Had to haul it into the dealer this time. By the time the truck got home it cost me $6500. It has been good now but the weather is also warmer. The truck has been inside all the time except for 2 nights since I owned it and both of those times I have had problems. Hopefully the dealer has it fixed now but I'm not fully convinced.

This probably isn't gonna go well.

I was thinking about it some more and my buddy hauls explosives and usually delivers to seismic jobs. They need the sleeper since they generally can't stop in town and have to drive team style because they can't leave the truck unattended or parked for obvious reasons.

Hi Turbo.

After twisting off a driveline and later taking the rear pinion out of a set of 40k diffs I'd have to agree. Might be fine on the road but not pulling a super B in soft fields.

I disagree on the too much power as I have an 02 dodge I turn back to factory in the winter because it's just asking for trouble on ice. It's an exception though.

Hi Duchek.

This ones supposed to have two years warranty left on the engine and trans. I was going to run the VIN at the Mack dealer and see what work has been done to it and if there actually is warranty left. Have to see if emissions are covered.

Shouldn't those modules have a parts warranty or is it like most electrical. Too bad so sad it worked at the factory, you must have screwed it up.

I did get warranty on two of the modules out of them all. The dealer was not very helpful and neither were guys at the parts counter. Other then the emission problems I love the truck. Just wish I could find a shop to take that crap off. Nobody around has cracked the software yet on a mack engine.

Hi Duchek.

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully your problems figured out. Always sucks when you feel like the mfgs expect you to be a guinea pig on a six figure purchase.

Thanks.

The trucks we're buying are being replaced with Macks and are coming from four different locations. Three of them we are dealing with shop management when we pick them up. They are not impressed with the Mack trucks as a matter of fact they have delayed the last two trucks they are selling us because of issues with the Macks. One shop claims Mack reimbursed them three million dollars last year for towing charges, another is claiming they have to keep a dozen trucks local because they can't get a day out of them without issues. Another said leave the old truck and take the new one... Personally I think I'd keep shopping. It appears to be an awful nice truck to be trading in for a different make (I wonder if their new truck is Maxxforce powered which is just as bad or worse..).

All this being said, people seem to be happy with Volvos, what's the difference?

Hi Offroad.

The Mack dealer told us the engine is mechanically identical to a Volvo. Just running different electronics.

Our other option is to go pre-emission but then most of the trucks have 20,000+ hrs. Already have several with more hours than that and, I'm trying to get away from fixing the little problems that come at that age ie; seals leaking, suspension, electrical etc. I don't mind doing it just don't have time.
