I am getting my N5 ready for soybeans for the first time since I've owned it. The cage sweep is in good shape and is fully functional. The cage did not have any covers in place. According to my manual there should be a large cover on the back all the way on the right side of the machine that can stay in place for all crops except corn. However, this one is missing. Is it important to have or will it not make any difference? Also, it says to install two covers just on either side of the center support. Are those important as well?

I'm only running a 15 foot flex so the combine shouldn't be pushed too hard.

Thanks for any help!

I run covers across the area just above the concave in cerials. I have the cage sweep out of my N6. I don't run the large covers that cover the top left and right of the cage at all. The reason I run the covers above the concave is straw will plug the area around the cage and eventually plug the whole backside of the cage. When this happens you lose separation area. I don't run any covers in lentils and canola. They didn't leave enough clearance between the cage and the tin at the back on the N series.

About the cage sweep removing-I posted an earlier post about problems with having it removed. I have a N-7 that I purchased and it was removed. We are now learning how to run without it and are having good luck. One positive is when we pull green material into the machine, the cage sweep doesn't have the slip clutch go off and the light come on.
