1st year with a 1981 N-6. The rear wheel assist does not seem to work. When just driving the machine around the yard, the ground speed slows noticeablely when engaging the switch, which if I understand the manual ,indicates the system is working. However in the field, in tough going, all it seems to do is cause a drastic reduction in ground speed, & if in 2nd gear, brings the machine to a complete stop. There appears to be a very small oil leak on the left side, but very small. Any ideas on checking this system out. Never had rear assist before, but sure could use it here in east Ohio this year. Thanks

I'm afraid one or both of your rear wheel motors is bypassing oil. Since the oil will flow to the path of least resistance it causes the combine to stall at higher pressures. The higher the gear the higher the pressure required to move the combine. There are flow control valves in the rear axle to limit rear wheel spin but they can only do so much. You may have to rebuild or replace one or both motors.

If the center cap has a hole in the center it is disengaged. Take a 7/16" wrench and remove the 2 bolts and turn the cap over so the nipple points out. The only reason the disengage them is if you have to tow the machine. You also need to remove the final drive input shafts to avoid damaging the hydro if towing.
