I have read in your posts that to adjust the clutch tension for the feeder beater sprocket on the Gleaners, you have to add those hardened shim washers between the bearing collar and the sprocket. I thought those were mainly to get the drive and driven sprockets to line up or is my thinking way wrong? I am using the shim washers on the outer end (underneath the big disc that holds the springs in) to get the adjustment according to the books recommended specs. Book says 1/4"-5/16". I have it at 1/4" or maybe a hair under now. It was slipping terrible in green stemmed beans earlier and clutch jaws are good. Somewhat of a feeding problem also as those green ones seems to hang on the head more-so. Do the springs ever get weak? I have never replaced these and the combine is an 86 model. Also was wondering if the unload collar is strong enough on an M3 to add a 30" extension? I don't plan on unloading on the go.

as stated they HAVE to be between the collar and sprkt. What happens is as the clutch slips, it hammers out the soft lock collar and shims and releases the back side of the clutch to move away from the fixed position of the outer half. We like to assemble clutch with only one spring and shim the back until the beater clutches will not slip, them remove one or two shims to assure the clutch can slip. Then add what ever springs deemed necessary. You can have a million pounds of spring force, but if the back is not set properly , it will still slip as the back jaws back away from the front jaws.
