Growing feed barley this yr wondering how much actual N guys are putting down? I realize it depends on soil tests, stubble being planted on, and of course expected yield.
When I have fertilized mine it seems like it’s too much as it starts to lodge. I don’t think it needs as much as durum or wheat?

Variety and area makes a big difference of how hard you can push the barley. Generally we are 10-15lbs less on feed barley than our wheat. On some of our land we can put as much N with barley as wheat without issue.

Sirish, and Esma supposed to be able to pound the N to it. Very short varieties. Haven’t pushed them yet but our Sirish ran 110 on 70lbs of N

A bit of potash with the seed seems to help with lodging.

We usually run .8lbs of N per bushel on barley. On our better fields we’ll push 1lb of N per bushel but we usually palisade those fields.

Typically I put 120lbs. And typically I’ll get 110-115 bushels. In 2022 I put 80 lbs cuz I had another 40-50 lbs in the ground. Well it ran 80 bushels. So back to my original plan.

Everybody’s barley around here lodged last year. Our earlier synergy and Austenson faired the best for us for standing.
