I have heavy clay soil with 5% o.m. With unharvested soybeans due to horrible weather this harvest and never got worked. We typically rely on conventional tillage to warm and deal with residue. I would like to know others experiences growing corn under zero tillage scenario. We use JD 1790 with both liquid and dry fertilizer by 1910 cart. We are in an area similar to Manitoba growing 70-77 day corn.

Conditions like that I would say could be trouble for corn. Corn likes tillage the cooler the climate. Just my .02 worth.

Is a Salford RTS or Lemken heliodore enough tillage or do you think I should pull the disk out and full on get it worked?

The salford won't be enough but the Lemmon probably will be. Depends on the stubble. Beans and canola don't need much tillage. If it goin on a cereal pull out the disk.

How much N you use mb?? We usually 120-150 range

Got any pics of your 1790/1910 combo? Curious as I would like to do the same. As for your corn, the blacker, the better in my experience. We are trying corn on 15" rows. Seems to be working if we could figure out how to harvest it.

A heavy harrow would be enough tillage,, maybe two passes... Biggest is to get some brown up to get the sun moving..
Bought a Coulter harrow and can't be happier with minimum tillage it does

Could you not just hit it with 1 or 2 light cultivator passes? We're quite as short season as you, more like 83ish day corn but that's we do. Otherwise we find it just takes too long to get things going. What can you get for yields up there? How about your yields mbfarmer?

Most years we average 120-125. Best has been 140 worst has been 90-100. This year was our worst or second worst ever. Glad we didn't get much in. Instead planted wheat that ran 88 bushels and sold some today for 7.07. Might not plant an acre of corn next year. Usually do 2000 acres.

Gotta admit ive seen 88 bu wheat before. But never on broad acres. We have a hard time to avg 60 on big acreage.

That's 88 bu of spring wheat? I'd take that! Our corn ran 116 and all sample. Not a whole lot of fun

Our spring wheat in total did very good but the faller on the corn ground(already fertilized for corn) did 88 on 1000 acres. Of course we did sell some already at prices less than 7 but needless to say we were impressed with the yield. It was very slow combining.

sometimes bad springs can bring good things

I'd take a high speed disc across the field and work it, warm up the soil.
