thinking about updating 9650 to a 9660 or 9770 or 9870.
i know that the HUR auger is nice on our '06 9660.
any big improvements on the 70 over the 60 series?
i notice a pretty good price jump on the '09 vs '08 models, were there some bugs in the early 70 series?
How bout that powercast tailboard, does that work well, and is it only available on the 9870?
any other "must have" options.
we harvest wheat, soybeans, and grass seed.
thanks

The early 70 series only have two real bugs which they then fixed on the 2009 models. They are: the feed acc belt which went from a double wide to triple and the concave motors broke off and a support was added which solved the problem. The 2009 models had a new curse which was the slip clutches, JD changed suppliers and got a batch of really terrible slip clutches, supposedly fixed on the 2010 models, i'm sure there will be an update for the 2009 models. We have been running the powercast tailboard for two years now and with 40ft drapers it is the only way to go. It is not required if your picking up solely 30ft swaths. The new command centre in the 70 series is very nice, takes some getting used to. The 70 series got ALOT better chopper than the 60 series and also has an option for Xtra heavy lift cylinders which are a must have if using large/heavy headers.

I think you have mistaken me for someone with a very similar name, i havn't been bashing deere lately. we havn't had much trouble with our deeres.
we have been lexion-free for 5 years, and pretty happy with the transition.
thanks for your opinions on the 70 series.

And a related question . . . are the '06 / '07 60 series a better machine than the '04 / '05 machines? I know the newer ones have the updated air cooling intake system, and I believe this was also the time they installed the Bullet Rotor, is that right? Was wanting to know what else was different about the two variations, and whether it would be worthwhile to pick one over the other. We harvest only milo at this time, but may get into some corn or sesame in the coming years. I'm thinking that a late 9660STS might be a couple leaps ahead of our 9650STS, without having to pony up for the 70 series. Am I on the right path????????

The 06 and 07 has the 9 liter engine, extended engine deck relocated the battery, my 06 and 07 were very impressive machines the biggest draw back in good milo was the clean grain system it would overload and loose grain out the bottom thru the clean grain fan. the 9770 has a bigger clean grain system and helped alot Ive had more machanical issues with the 70 series but the performance was a little better, dont really like the command post, the chopper was a big improvement
