Curious as to where the "silver seeder' tag came from on gleaner machines. I own an R60 with orange stripe and I feel it is an underrated machine as for capacity, fuel consumption and hopefully reliability. When I brought the unit home everyone I know except for the local Agco dealership wondered why I bought one, and the regular comment from the uninformed was that these machines throw over and are unreliable. My grain quality in the hopper is excellent and this machine has better capacity than I ever imagined. So what started this "silver seeder " nonsense?

Cant help ya on the origin, but I get those same comments and I have'nt even bought one yet. All I have to do is mention I am looking at a gleaner and the funny looks and muttering start.
Its amazing how many people judge a machine on its looks or their own lack of understanding how the machine works.

Usually slang names or I think they are called acronyms, start from "the other brand" loyalty. If you have a cih you call a sts a straight through seeder, etc.

Glad to hear the machine is working out for you. Depending how things go with my search, I may have a gleaner soon.

Most of the people that pitch at me for owning a Gleaner are the hardcore green cult guys. They don't have much room to talk since the R-62 is probably twice the combine their 9500 is. Cleaner sample with a fraction of the loss.

Thanks for the replies people, I was concerned I was missing something. This is my second harvest with machine and last year was all tough and wet conditions, and it did not allow me to see what this unit was all about. This year 50 bpa+ barley with straw and 5+ mph with extremely clean sample with very few damaged. So far all the canola seems to be in the hopper with very little dockage or damage. I am watching as close as I can for losses but our season is short in northern Alberta and when I have to go I just go! With more experience I can hopefully tune it in and keep losses at a minimum. Why would I own a green grain grinder with high fuel consumption or overpay for other brands when this machine works the way it does?

iv heard it means something like this. the combine looses so much grain the basically looses enough to replant the ground, thus giving it the name the "silver seeder". thats just my theory that i heard. i could be wrong.

I understand that the reason for the "seeder" side of things is the heavy losses they say the machine has, but don't all machines chuck over if not set correctly or are not being operated correctly? My concern was that Gleaner had a history of problems with heavy losses on their machines. My unit gives great quality sample, has lots of capacity and is easy on fuel. I have not noticed heavy throw over in any of the crops I have been in. What causes one of these units to lose grain other than the obvious, if anything. Thanks for any info, I have only had this unit for 2 seasons and it is one of the few transverse units in the area. You can imagine the resistance to this machine I face when discussing with other producers

Gleaner Weld

Gray duct tape is "Gleaner Weld"

Used to hear: "when Gleaner gets the design right they will start painting them" Now they are painted so it killed that.

Hesston still gets that same line as the paint color is Autumn Prime and looks like primer color.

Deere names: IVT is imitation Vario Transmission, STS is straight thru seeder, or stuck tighter than Sh*t. Triple link suspension is just 3 links of log chain holding the front axle on.

AGCO tractos are pumpkins.

I would'nt just pick on the green guys connor, lots a red and yellow folks with that same assinhand issue.
When I was a kid, my dad had an "L". I remember the personal nickname it got was the "galvanized goose". Whenever I was running it, someone would allways write in the dust on the back with their finger "caution student driver".

Our old L2 beat every new John Deere out there. Around here you can tell which fields were done with John Deere's. One guy with a 9650 or something like that threw out so much wheat 2 years ago he left it and combined it the next summer. Needless to say he was the laughed at pretty hard around here.

Last fall there were several fields in my area combined with new green equipment that were reseeded. One corn feild in particular was solid green with sprouted corn thrown over. I would hate to think about how much was thrown over. I guess some people can afford to do that.

There's names for everything, i think most of the names come from operator's not knowing what their doing. Anybody can run a combine and re-seed a field, just let me open your concave and i'll make all the gleaner/case/cat/lex/deere machines do the same thing lol.

Gleaner is looked down on here as much as cat/lex/claas is because there isnt and probably never will be any dealer support.

They also get the "Tin Shed" name hear in Australia, even though they have now been painted for ten years. We have only just got a gleaner, yet to harvest any crop but were impresed by the simple design and value for money. Talking to the CIH salesman the other day and he pretty much laughed in our face and told us he would never trade it. We live at Temora in southern NSW, and the red dealer and a lot of the red owners are very arogant.

CropHawk where are you from Wagga, and how are the crops looking? Do you run a Gleaner?
We are north east of Temora, and could do with some more rain reel soon.
