We started combining corn yesterday and this is the first time we have used our R62 in corn. Unfortunately its also the first time we have used this N series 8 row head and im very dissapointed with the head. The corn isn't very good because it has alot of stalk rot and is falling over and breaking off right when it hits the head so i cant blame it all on the head. First of all, due to the breaking stalks there is more trash then we usually have going into the head and combine. Because of all the trash, if i go over 3.5 mph it just starts building up infront of the auger on the 2 middle rows right before it goes into the feederhouse and then the ears eventually stop going into the head so i have to slow down to 3 mph to let the big pile slowly get caught by the auger and eventaully get fed into the feederhouse. Because of that issue i cant ever get the combine up to full capacity. I almost think it could be the auger turning to slowly, but we just replaced the sprocket with the slip clutch on it that runs the auger and it costed $500 from our agco dealer... Anyone have any other solutions or have any problems like this?

I know nddan would say to extend the auger flighting so that it meets in the center. You might consider running the feeder chains in high speed to see if it helps. I think you should make sure that the conveyor auger is not more than one half inch clearance from the floor. Try removing one snapping roll bar (six per row), on one row to see if it feeds better without pushing the stalks easy to do and if you like the results on one row you can go ahead and do the rest. Try squaring the edge of the auger flighting with a grinder, caution no sparks on windows. Snapping roll bars can be switched side to side to get a sharper edge grabbing the corn stalks. Make sure that the stripper plates are adjusted 1/8 inch wider at the rear than at the front and you could try pushing the gathering chains in at the rear to take out any small cobs that get lodged.

Assuming your R62 is a corn, bean , wheat machine you would need to unlock the variable speed drive on the left side of the feeder house and then normally put the feeder chains drive belt on the right side of the feeder house to slow speed by moving belt.

Several things to check on the older N-Series corn head when having problems with trash build-up. Make sure that the lugs of gathering chain do not stick past stripper rods. This will allow stalks to be pulled down by snapping rolls rather than breaking as many stalks off if lugs protrude past stripper plates. Stripper plate width is critical when dealing with down corn stalks. You may have to run them a little bit wider to allow stalks to be pulled down rather than being broken off by narrow setting.(Normal setting would be 1 1/8" front and 1 1/4" back, I would run a little wider than this unless you are dealing with drought size ears.) Auger height needs to be set as high as possible (1"-1 1/2",cut slots longer and lengthen drive chain if needed.) and back to rear stripper as far as possible. We have also taken 1/2" lock washers and installed them about 12" apart around the flighting in the middle where trash build-up is and weld in place. This helps grab trash when auger is rotating rather than building up in front of conveyor. You need to get material under auger to convey it not push it in front of flighting. I don't think speeding up auger is going to help if you can't get flighting to grab material. Good liuck and I hope you get cornhead to feed better.
