Quantum tow behind plugging runs

1814 Views 37 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  chaddermd
Does anyone else have trouble with a quantum tow behind wanting to constatly plug seed/fert runs in the manifolds? Every tank I probably have 2-7 plugged runs. Not lumps or anything it just seems like it's having trouble handling the product. I'm set as follows:

Single fan 4700 rpm (this is maxed)

200lb/acre of esn/urea/potash/Sulphur down centre, plenum set to 4

100lbs/acre of 11-51-0 + canola going down the wings
Plenum set to 3

Anhydrous in centre

I'm plugging both the shoots. I wouldn't say one is drastically worse than the other. Also, I used this drill a year before putting the anhydrous on and I wouldn't say it was any better then.

Any new ideas would be appreciated!

if a 9 series cart do you have an oil cooler on the intake of fan, make sure it’s clean ours clogged up with ash and fines while seeding a paddock that had been burnt previously during slight drizzle and we blocking secondary runs all of a sudden wasn’t pulling enough air

I don't have an oil cooler but there is a screen. I'll go clean it out right now actually.

It was a bit plugged but nothing serious
Does it help if you slow down ?

I would also try slowing down. With our C2 it would start to plug up if we went faster than 3.7 mph.

How many feet and how many manifolds, on my C1 they didn’t put enough on and it couldn’t handle the product it needed too. I ended up adding 1 manifold and blocking 1 run off all the others to add that 1

why don't you pull a hose out of the opener and duct tape it to the frame to see how high the product comes out of the hose
you want it to go at least a foot higher then the hose. You want the hose to be level with the frame when you do this test

are you absolutely certain that your fan is actually turning that fast?

Yes but I'm already going 3.8-3.9.

I should have included that info from the start.

60 feet. 8 manifolds. 4 7s and 4 8s. Did it help when you added the manifolds?

Well, no. But pretty sure. The same tractor and a morris ground drive cart would spin at 6200 maxed. This one is vrt/ict and bleeds some oil to run the metering shafts. Hence the fan speed is slower.
So I'm not familar with this drill, but 300 lbs product and 4700 rpm seems low. Guess my point with slowing down if your issue goes away you know it's most likely a fan speed issue. If not then maybe something else. My 66' drill and 300 lb I'd be pushing 5500-5800 rpm

Yes. I've talked to my dealer who talked to the Morris rep who recommended 5000-6000. I might need a bigger hydraulic pump.
The rep also said I need 22 gal/min hydraulic flow. This tractor is supposed to produce just shy of 60. I might get this thing flow tested.

Yes it did help when I added a manifold, but I was 60ft and had 7 and went to 8. You should be goodish with that, after the Morris I will never buy a single fan again it may work but there is no extra. Another thing you can look for is air leaks or cracks on your tanks, I had mine crack and it still worked just plugged lots. Look for fert dust outside on the welds. I also had some issues with the air baffles not directing the air properly. Good luck I think that’s all I got for ideas.

So it was better with the dual fan? My dealer told me to stay away from dual fans because he thought it would be more trouble and I wouldn't have enough oil flow to run them
We are seeding 120kg of peas and 50kg of fert at the moment with 9365 and c2 , single fan at 4100 rpm at 8.5kmh, 60ft, 10 inch 8 run ,raycol stainless steel upright risers and heads though
32mm secondary runs I might add

Those are impressive numbers. Is that kg/acre or kg/ha? Also is that single shoot or double?

My brother has a tow between c2 and he can honk it down without trouble too. Ive heard from people with other quantum that don't have the trouble I have either.

Kg,ha , sorry I’m getting confused now using to many different measuring units in imperial and metric!!
Single shoot
Yeah I use kg/ha too. Is it fairly dry where you are? I notice the humidity makes a big difference in how much plugging there is, especially if there is any Sulphur in the blend. When I can see my anhydrous manifolds start to really grow ice is when I have the most problems.
my 60ft contour was ALWAYS plugged.....from the openers to the meters..multiple times a day... even when seeding just beans at 60lbs. I solved it by getting a different drill. Had nice crops with it though

your experience is not at all typical though
