02 R72 in the shop now for check over, what should I look for? Will do the usual, pull rotor check cage and bars, feeder chains and sprockets are new, needs acouple belts and will pull main clutch apart and likely variable speed on opposite side, and probably main shaft bearings.

TIA

Check rotor coupler and splines on rotor gearbox, check spindle bushings on rear axle and wheel bearings, if it has mechanical drive straw spreader check bearings and gears, PTO bearing PTO shaft on engine, while u have PTO shaft off pull dampner off of flywheel and clean dust out from behind it. It will really smoothin out the engine. Also check engine fan for looseness. While u r checking that also check air conditioning compressor bracket that mounts to engine for cracks. Take variable speed header drive apart and clean. Take bottom panel off of the air conditioning unit under the cab and clean the evaporator and the heater core. Should really have Cummins out and set valves and injectors, recommend every 1000hrs. Check bin unloader belt, chopper belt, and clean grain elevator belt. Check u-joint in the bin loading auger and the u-joint in the unloader elbow. Make sure that u keep the unloader elbow greased. I is full off 164 balls just like a giant bearing. If it is not kept greased it will wear and the ball bearing race will come apart and the auger will fall off. Pull alternator off and blow out with air, gets dust built up under the screen. This is just a few things that are not obvious, if u have anymore questions just ask.

I would also check all of your pully idler arm bushings. I have about the same hours on my R62 and will be changing all of the bushings and sleeves on the idlers. Hard to tell they are worn until you take the tension off the belts.

Thanks guys, we check it over yearly and cover off everything mentioned, must be looking in the right places, simple machines , just sometimes you get so used to something not being an issue that you miss it once and oops.

we replaced all our alternators with after market brand new Leece Neville 160 amp units (on 3 R-72's). What a difference, now especially at nite with umteen lites on and the unloader auger is on the voltage stays up which holds the magnetic clutches engaged more firmly.

I bought the Leece Neville alternators at "Superior industrial frictions" but they are also sold at "Fort Gary" and perhaps at Kenworth or Western star etc . They were about $200. each (they put them on sale occasionally) (no core charge). The pulleys from the "Delco" alternator fits the Leece Neville but we had to modify the brackets and buy different belts, We didn't have a moment of trouble with our lites and clutches this year. Every other year we blew one or two alternators and this was after tearing the "Delco" alternators apart, blowing them out putting in new brushes and some diodes etc.
