All R-40's are 155 HP Deutz with 150 bushel grain tank. Early R-42's are the same specs. I think in 1992 or 93 the engine was up to 180 HP from 155 HP. Cummins was an option in 1993 as well and was probably also 180 HP. Grain tank went up to about 180 bushels as well....they raised the tank up to the height of the cab roof. In the 1996 model year the cleaning shoe got longer.

If your ground will allow you to run a 20' (not too hilly/rolling) you definitely want to. I ran a 15 for years in beans and never could get a clean sample. Bought an old 20' head and my problems went away. You will have no trouble with the combine handling it. I have a 93 R52 with the small shoe and 180hp Deutz and can easily run along 5mph in 65bpa beans. Haven't grown any wheat in many years but had 100 acres of oats a few year ago and it seems to me about 3 - 4 mph range for them and we cut them short for the straw. Handles rye fairly well, as we grow a few acres for seed/fall ground cover. I have been told that the cummins engine uses a little more fuel but you get more hp too.

My reason for asking is I currently run a '82 model M2 corn plus. I love this combine and currently run a 20' ridged for wheat and fescue and a 18' in beans. I just would like to upgrade to the R series but don't want to have a large combine doing small jobs. In response to amos there are plenty of terrices here. I thought a 52 with latteral tilt would be the trick but wow $$$$
