What is everyone's thoughts on making this work. We are thinking of using the three spring contact controller from an older Agco head in the center of 972 head in place of the potentiometer.

Yes, the three spring height controlled will work. I had done this on my 93 R62 and 974 MacDon head. You just have to get the linkages and travel of the switches right so you get good and quick responce from them. It saved me $1600 to upgrade the combine.
