I pulled the processor this A.M. on my 91 R60 to check the rotor drive splines and gearbox condition. Sunnybrook enclosed, solid helicals, looks like 2 reverse bars on front of processor? What modifications are you guys recommending for this unit? Canola and barley this year. Do I need a cage sweep? mine looks to have been removed. what to do to check gearbox backlash or play? Lots of questions and no experience with these machines as noone has any around me. My dealer tells me this should be a P1, but it looks like a P3 to me? Thanks for any info in advance. I would post some pics, but I cannot get them to load. It seems different than I remember last year?

Kind of hard to tell in the pics, but those bars look REALLY worn. I stared at the helical pics too, and they appear to be way down as well.

As for the gear box the main thing to check is the wear on the splines. easiest way to do this is to remove the coupler from the router, crawl up in there and hand fit to shaft. You can also tell of the splines on the output shaft of that gearbox are sharp. They should be machined into that shaft and have flat tops on them.

Can't speak to backlash. Don't know.

Bars I am O.K. with, it is the helicals I wonder. Should I be changing them out to the channel style or will that not work correctly with the enclosed rotor? Splines look good, but I will fit the coupler this A.M. and check for play. I held the gearbox output shaft from inside the cage and had someone rotate the box back and forth with the belt and it seemed to be acceptable. Thanks for the input okfarmer, it is appreciated.

Here's note I just got from a guy that fixed up his R60 with P3.

I installed the helicals, sweeps, extended bars etc. We have been cutting barly and winter wheat. I am quite impressed with the performance of this machine since the upgrades. We are running 6 machines from N6 to R62 models. This is now the fastest machine in the field. Side by side with an R62, both running 30' model 700 headers, the old R60 walks away from the R62. Time to upgrade the 62! Thanks for all your help Dan.

'90 and '91 had the P3. You do have a P3 where someone has installed the old flat helicals from P1 system. I would certainly install the channel helicals but not exactly factory. I use mostly a steep pitch on thresher side and mostly normal pitch on seperator side. Get me email address and I'll send a couple pictures on how we do in the R60-70s with P3. Much less necessary to have cage sweep if set up with channel helicals all though the fore aft cage sweep that was in your machine worked very well and was little to no trouble. They have installed a P1 Sunnybrook rotor in your machine which should work OK. I would remove reverse bars from seperator side and install forward. I would also straighten out the factory bent over edge on the discharge paddles.
