Having been running the R72 with M11 we are at least considering buying a new machine. Back in the days of the M11 the R72/75 offered the monster motor and the 330 bu grain tank as the benefits over the R62/65 with its 8.3 Cummins and 300 bu tank. The price for that upgrade cost about 20K at the dealer level. I'm sure retail prices were closer to 30K difference. While that was a lot of money to pay the difference between the 8.3 and M11 was worth it. Anyway after studying the newest version of the 66 and 76 I really don't see much difference. Yes the grain tank on the 76 offers 30 bushel advantage, but both machines use the same engine. In talking with my local diesel repair center they say they can take the 8.4 Sisu in the 66 and give it the same hp as the 76 for less than $1000. If that is the case then we have a huge price disparity for a 30 bushel larger hopper. I guess I'm wondering first off are there any other differences I am missing and secondly has anyone had their 8.4 reprogrammed for more hp? Finally does anyone run a 35' flex on a 66?

all i would say is that if there is no difference in throat size or other capacity limiters, then id get the 66 and have it stepped up. However you need to remember when you go awaya from factory specs like that and the engine fails they wont warrenty it. Even if something un related happens like an oil line blows off and you cook the engine before you realize it (for us it took one min of operation before the hired man realized what happend or so he claimed). They will find out it was stepped up and your screwed... im talking from expericance..
Also id find out if the insides of the combine are heavier like the l2 corn plus comparied to the regualr one

The R76 has a larger diameter engine fan than that of the R66. This is to allow more cooling for turning more horsepower. If you bump the horsepower on the R66, you might have some cooling issues.

I'm assuming your referring to a 35' flex auger head? I wouldn't be afraid of running one on a R66. Although, I would prefer a flex draper of some kind. There are several custom harvesters that run 36' drapers on their R65s.

I dont think that 50 horsepower would cause any cooling problems at all, maybe 150, but not 50, especially on an engine that is aftercooled and using boost instead of displacment to make so much of its power, The extra air associated with extra boost should evacuate a lot of your heat, just make sure she is strait piped like all good gleaners are. I COULD NEVER see giving 30k more for the same size machine, heck for 30K you could have someone build you a 3000 horse engine for it, then with the money left over you could just buy a grain cart and weld it to the top of you bin, then you would have a 3000 horse combine that held 8 or 9 hundred bushel. Wala, a class 20 combine for the same price you could have that class 7 R76.
But on the serious side, I would consider the 66 with a aftermarket bin extension, and I would also look around and see if there are any people that make a safe aftermarket chip/box that can turn up the susi, and or a diesel shop that can program it instead of the dealer, that way if something fluke does go wrong with the engine, you can pull the chip, or program it back to stock, and the warranty will still be good.

We have our R65 with extentions that hold 425 bushels. We were thinking of doing the same thing when we trade. (turn up hp and switch over bin extentions) Just to much difference for a software issue. Talked to Agco rep at combine clinic and he said that was the only difference.

The best way to compare models is to get signed up at your dealer for your agco parts book so you can access their parts diagrams and numbers. This system is not very easy to use, I don't know who writes their software but after some practice, you can get good enough to actually compare components right down to injectors and turbos, intercoolers, radiators and drives. Belts, transmissions, all the relevant parts to compare whether something is the same or different. It takes some time to do this but you then have solid facts and not speculation. You just can't count on salesmen and partsmen to answer these questions because they simply don't know as it is not important for their particular job to spend time at this. When it comes to these subtle differences, you are on your own but these resources can give you the answer to most of these detailed technical questions. As far as turning a 66 into a 76, I doubt it is as simple as a little time with a laptop. The guys that do the programming on these electronic engines are pretty smart and are not going to make it simple to change things easily. Remember when you buy ever increasing hp in most products, you are not usually buying a lot of extra equipment, but you are buying more and more warranty. Take a jd tractor for example, from the 8130 to 8430, there is no difference in tractor frame, axles, final drives, ring and pinion assuming you compare tractors with same size rear axle option. Yet there is probably a 10K jump as you go larger. 250 hp through that drive train is statistically going to have more failures than 200 horse through the same unit. The company knows this and cover themselves for warranty purposes because of this. It is just like selling insurance and they also know that many of these units will survive the warranty period even with the higher power and that extra initial charge is pure profit.

Our dealer has one every year. Usually 2 or 3 Agco reps. They go over new products or updates to older equipement. Lots of Q&A, maintenance things. I'm lucky to have one of the best dealers I could ask for. Also get Excellent service from Chevyman2995, day or night.
