That is an excellent question, I also have observed that.
I wonder if it has to do with material, grain or mog, striking the loss pad at a sharper angle increasing hit count?
And conversely hitting shallower going up hill reducing hit count?
Anyone?

I'm quite sure that the more direct contact angle, as you mentioned, would be the cause for this.
