To get better straw, take off the fishback bars and put on the smooth straight bars. The slotted grates will help some and they will work in corn. Just be sure and put the channels on the inside and position them so that the entire slot is not covered. Also, keep your rotor speed on the lower end of the range if you can.
When the 1400 series first came out, slotted grates were all that we had. Keystocks came out several years later.

If the grates were used in small grain harvest, they would be bolted onto the outside of the grates partially covering up the slotted holes to keep to much straw from falling through. They need to be bolted on the inside to help tumble the trash and allow trapped kernels to separate out and fall through the slots. This info is also in the ops manual.
