Re: Lack of paint on 2006 2388

I kind of like it that way. I'd rather not have paint on the collar and baring flanges along with the end of shaft. Makes for easy removal, rather than take the time to use emherst cloth to remove paint when I need to take the bearing out. Just my preference.

Re: Lack of paint on 2006 2388

its not really that noticeable on our 05 combine

And this way you won't be buring blest off cause of excess paint in some pullys

the hose's don't get painted either

and then in the engine compartment one thing is black

overall you don't notice it after a day or so

are they talking about more black parts than even the 05 model?????

Re: Lack of paint on 2006 2388

Since the production of 2388's moved from East Moline to Grand Island there have been several changes in the way the combines are built, including painting pieces before assembly rather than painting the entire combine after assembly. That is consistant with how the other products are built there as well. Pre-painting the pieces before assembly insures that the paint process gets the paint into harder to get areas. It does though, prevent the paint acting as a lock washer on bolts! From the service side, the new assembly procedure does make servicing easier. No more paint flecks getting into the hyd. oil when a line is opened.

Is this new process better?? I guess time will tell.

I'll agree with hfh.

I just hate it when lock collars and shaft end itself is painted.
I have alot better things to do than spend half an hour scraping paint so I can replace a bearing.

Re: Lack of paint on 2006 2388

I think when bits are not painted it looks more like the combine was assembled rather than built, whilst pipes and bearings may look better to some of you with no paint on, just think what they will look like in 10 or 15 years time. Its alright putting grease on bearing collars, but eventually this will get washed off etc and not get replaced, also pipe crimps will loose that nice golden colour and go dull or start to rust.
As for having to clean shaft ends off prior to removing a bearing, surely paint is better to get off than rust and lets face it how often do bearings need replacing on an Axial Flow?

I can understand some of you guys prefering to have paint on to revent rust. In my case, I park my machines inside in the event of rain conditions.

I have to agree with most of you I do like undoing a bolt and not have it turn hard all they way off. I have to laugh when I tell how Case combines were painted in EastMoline. Two guys with hoods on in a paint shop every thing but the glass RED! JD has been dipping parts since before 1996. We toured the JD combine plant one morning had lunch on them then went to Case IH in the afternoon. Upon entering JD I was impressed with the factory (first manufactouring plant I had ever toured} they had cardboard over the windows that faced the CaseIH plant. I could be wrong but I believe the tour guide told us that 1400 people working 2 shifts could produce 30 combine /day. Upon entering CaseIH plant ( I'm bias) but we all notice how much brighter the lights were and how the employes were talkative to us and smiling. No one hardly smiled at JD plant. At this Case Plant they had boom box's playing @ there work stations tour guide told us that 900 employes working one long shift 10 or 12 hours I forget, could produce 28 combine max. Back to thread I'm for non painted bolts I enjoy this on our 2377.

Re: Lack of paint on 2006 2388

J.D. forgot to take some duct tape off our 9600's back in the mid 90's. IT was on the pannell outside the right window of the cab. I was going to peel it off, but there was no paint or primer underneath, so it was left it on.

I dont envy any painters job. Its a tough one, and is in need of more tallent then skill. Though I have noticed spray paint in the last couple years have improved tremendously. Not as many runs for me.

Thank you very much Combiness, It goes as well as it looks! Last harvest we put a set of 22 Gorden bars and they have made a big difference to its preformance. I give it a good service out of season and try to anticipate problems, although some things surprise you! I have all the pto and hydro off at the moment as the pto shaft has worn where it goes into the flywheel, I am importing parts from Illinois and including shipping I am saving over $2000.00 to the UK. price, which I think is a disgrace!
