looks like a bearing fit issue. He used the can to make a shim, to take up clearance between the shaft and bearing. That is your typical barn engineering there. It may not be right but, it does get them out of a jam.
Farmers are the best engineers around. I guess being poor "financially" forces the mind to work.
Its a pretty common problem on the 9760's that after you overload your tailings elevator a few times, you will break the lock collar on one of the two bearings that holds the slip-clutch for the tailings elevator. When that happens the axel will start spinning freely inside the bearing and will end up wearing a groove in the axel where the bearing would normally fit. if you look closely at first picture you will see the axel is worn where i wrapped the coke can around.
The coke can shims the axel up and will let the bearing fit onto its original position. The amazing thing is that it will only take me an hour to rip that axel off, cut a coke can up, shim the axel, put the thing back and get the combine rolling. If you had to fill the groove with braise, or use liquid epoxy metal it would take you at least 8 hours.
And ive gone at least 800 hours on that cokecan, and it was fine when we sold the header.
all you need is spanners and a 10 cent coke can.
