Hey gleanerf2fan ! Ask and you shall receive.

Scans from my good friend & co-worker at SRS, "Steep."

More of Big Snort. From the last year (2004) that SRS ran this
combine before trading.

Hi 98j!

Once again - thanks for the (as always
) awesome pics you post on here!!!

Q: What controls/activates the leveling on the hillside machines? Does it have a gyroscope of some sort, maybe?
And what about the hight adjustment of the header, relative to the combine, when it's using the fore/aft leveler? Is it all automatic or does it have some manuel control in there too?

Thanks in advance!

My favorite series of "Big Snort" Had one of those magic
mornings to harvest...stopped my machine for a few minutes
and told "Bub" ( in "Snort") to smile and give me some good
shots with Mt Hood in the background:

Hey Peter! As for the leveling it depends. The control on the 403 &
453 is an oil dampened pendulum that hooks right on to the hydraulic valves that run the leveler. Look for this pendulum control
right in front of the grain tank just to the operators right. Also notice
that the 403/453 has only 3 leveling cylinders; two aft and only 1
for the side to side leveling. The ORIGINAL control on the 1470
was a Mercury Board first developed by Ray Hanson; it is a electric
over hydraulic setup. When the board tips, the mercury in the board
opens the circuit to the hydraulic valves to bring the machine back
to level. Both SRS 1470's had this original control system changed
out to one developed by Hillco. I am not sure exactly what they
use in that box to sense the slope change....just know that it
works really well. As for the header height control with the fore &
aft leveling.....that's all with the operator; ya just have to get a feel
for that. Hopefully ol' Redpainter will check in here and I am sure
that he can tell you way more about that than me!
Greetings to Denmark!!! All the best from Oregon.

Here is a picture of Ray "RA" Hanson on Labor Day of this year at the Davenport, Washington Vintage Harvest. He told a few stories of developing the mercury switch leveling system on the old John Deere 36 Pull machines.

This is the oil dampened pendulum 98j was talking about in his last post that controls the 4-way leveling
valves on the 403 Hillsides and 453 models. The pendulum sits in an oil filled pot (under the black fabric
cover). There is also a handle connected to the pendulum that goes into the cab so the operater can
operate the leveler from side to side, or to lock in place for when you move the machine down the road
from field to field.
