Re: TR 96 Reel Drive Problem

This is straight from the book. Kind of.

Reel will not turn
1. Key on thresher engaged. Place toggle switch in manual position. Remove console to gain access to speed controller. Do not disconnect wires.
Check for voltage @ white wire.

Voltage or no voltage?

2. No Voltage
Check 3A reel speed fuse, wire to fuse box (light blue/Yellow) from thresher switch.

3. Voltage @ white wire

Check for voltage at White/Black wire from reel speed controller.
No voltage=bad controller.

4.Key off. ohmmeter with + probe on Yellow and - on White/Black. Reads 9.3 to 10.3 Ohms, step 5.

Higher or lower -disconnect wires and test them again -still high or low, defective coil on speed control. Now 9.3 to 10.3? Open circuit in wires. Repair.

5. Key on. Rotate knob to slowest setting. Probe White/black and yellow. At slowest speed, 3-6 volts. At highest speed 9-12 volts. No voltage change = faulty controller.

low voltage -key off, check continuity between Black wire and good ground. No continuity = bad ground. Continuity = bad controller.

Try to muddle through this I guess and see what you can find

Re: TR 96 Reel Drive Problem

If it has a valve like the tx you can turn a screw on the top to get the reel to turn if the
electrical speed variation part is not working. It will of course be at a fixed speed. It may
be useful till a permanent fix is made.

Re: TR 96 Reel Drive Problem

That's what we did, but finally that even wouldn't get it moving. The mechanic pulled it out, opened it up and cleaned it out. Not sure what else he did but so far it's working. Looked into getting a new one. $ 2000.00 !!!!!!! ouch

Hey we have a tr96 with a 971 front on it and the reel won't turn. I've Checked the the flow of the oil and it's ok but when it comes out of the valve I don't have much pressure some times. Is there a way I can fix it to make it work?

I would suggest that you check the reel drive pump and feeder belt condition and tension first and make sure the oil reservoir above the RH drive wheel in filled to the bottom of the mesh strainer.

After that it sounds like you valve and electrical controller are working to control the flow ok. On the valve there is a small tube that kind of loops around the valve and connects both ends onto the valve. On one end there is a long hexagonal fitting that screws into the valve. In this fitting is the relief valve for the reel drive system, if the pressure goes over the relief it passes through the tube and forces the flow control spool to return more oil to tank and reduce the pressure to the pressure outlet of the valve. The relief valve is not really repairable but you used to be able to buy just that part if it is needed.

Had this happen just after dropping the pickup header off. Reels wouldn't turn. Long story short after checking hydraulic and electrical options . The female body on the combine side that drives the reel was inoperative. Looked fine but replaced, then A OK.
