Can anyone tell me why the rear mounted rotary screen was moved back to the side of the machine on the later '88 series? Did it have to do with the dust and chaff comming out of the back of the machine, and if so, why did it take CNH/Case-IH sooooo long to make the change? They had it on the back for at least 12 years if not more.

The screen was moved due to the tier III emissions rules. It required a much larger cooling system to deal with the increased heat and installation of a air-to-air after cooler. The rear screen could not provide enough cool air. If you look at the side of a later 2388 the engine compartment is equal in height to the top of the factory grain tank, around 10-12" higher than the earlier version 2388 models.
