Actually, that gray look is the natural oxidation of the zinc, which is beneficial to protecting the metal. The zinc oxide actually fills in small holes scars and scratches, preventing rust.

To "shine" them up, you can use a very mild oxalic acid solution, no more than 3-5 percent.
