I have a 1640 with a large wire and keystock set up now. I'm thinking of going with small wire concaves, should I put in the slotted grate also or could I get by with keeping the keystocks in?
Do the small wires make that much of a difference over just using cover plates on the large wires? Thanks for any help.

small wires will do a better job. The only reason I would run the slotted grates is if you were going to drop straw for baling. You would get better straw quality. Otherwise I would leave the keystocks in as they will do a better job of seperating and help reduce rotor loss.

Here in Minnesota the small wires is a must for wheat harvest. Many corn farmers were thinking they could just use the large wires to harvest. But to their surprise, the thrashing out of the heads was poor. then the operators think to close down the bottom sieve to help but ended up with a lot of return and in the field was regrowth .....H
