Spikes work great. Haven't seen a downside to using them. The trick is to get the right amount on and in the right configuration. Tried one machine with 2 sraight bars and 4 spikes in wheat, the other with no straights and 8 spikes. First setup worked much better. Same should work for soys. I think 2 more straights for corn will be necessary.
