I have one field that just does not want to take off and grow. I have considered reseeding it many times and then just decided against it. It has a stand, not a very good one. I went and dug some up today. It all appears to being growing a new set of roots. Never noticed this before. Normal? Drought stressed, it did get very dry after I seeded it. Since got good moisture. Fertalizer damge? I single shoot everything and put down a fair amount of fertilizer. No problems in the past. Did not have it get this dry after seeding in the past. Seeded this back on 4/26.

I would say that is normal. What we always call them secondary roots but I think the correct term is seminal roots. Always think that a good sign that crop will take off.

To me it looks like the wheat seed was planted to deep and the plant had to grow and establish its crown higher up above the lower set of roots. The big roots above are the anchor roots that are supposed to keep the plant from falling over i think. If the seed was planted shallower all those roots would be together at the crown and would appear as one set. The plant will be ok but if they are all like that i wouldnt be expecting big yeilds.
