We are currently looking at building a new shop. We haven't decided whether we want a steel frame building or a wood frame building. If we do a steel building how hard are they to finish on the inside? Is there any disadvantages of only lining it 8ft high? How complicated would it be to line the whole inside? If we build a wood frame we will hire it done whereas a steel frame we could do ourselves. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would like to thank you in advance.

orangeandlsverman,
there are arguements in favor of both but it really depends on what you want to spend and what some of you requirements are? Steel frame buildings give you wider spans and taller sidewalls but require expensive concrete foundations sometimes. You also have to factor lift/crane rental for erections pruposes. Wood frame or post frame is a good option also but you have some width and height restrictions sometimes with these types of construction. What part of the country are you located in? I assume you will be insulating this building because you mentioned liner steel. Liner steel is easier to install in a wood frame but can also be done without to much more effort in an all steel building. One of the biggest factors determining sidewall height now days is the door height you want and the type of door (slider, overhead door, bi-fold door, or hydro-swing door). I work for a construction company in the midwest and we're seeing alot of 18' and 20' sidewalls on the post frame buildings and even higher in the steel frame buildings. Biggest shocker with the all steel buildings might be the price right now. We've seen 20-30% increases since January on steel products. Last thing....... We are seeing alot of farmers take advantage of the 100% bonus depreciation opportunities on machine sheds and shops so far this year. Not sure if this applies to your situation or not but as always check with your accountant if yo have ? on it.
Hope this helps!

We built our shop in 1998 , we went steel.
It's 100' X 134' freespan with a 24' eve height , we poured 10' tall cement sandwich walls in the shop area and went with block on the walls in parts storage and office area. Works quite well , easy to finish and clean.
