05 9660 STS with 750 sep hours had the reverser quit in mid use. Hasn't seen alot of abuse that said I haven't been running it so I have to take the word of the operator. One thing while I was troubleshooting is that when the reverser switch is engaged then shut off of course it doesn't reverse ( feed chain or header auger) but just before the movement stops the chain and table auger starts briefly in the normal operating direction . This is on a 615 when it was doing canola. Any thought would be appreciated.

McFarms, I would say that you need to drain the hyd. oil from the little cover underneath the feederhouse. There are 3 bolts on the reverser right above the safty stop. take them lose drain the oil from the cover and tighten the three again. There is probably oil bypassing an o-ring and not letting the reverser engage. There is a pip for this problem.

On the right hand side on the lower shaft of the feeder house, there is a sensing wheel that has come loose. There is an updated wheel from JD to put on there. This wheel senses if there is any movement before allowing the the reverser to engage. Hopefully you caught it soon enough that there was no damage to the reverser.

just to add a little more here...
when this sensor wheel gets loose as to where the sensor can no longer read it. the combine has a built in 10 second delay before it will change reverser direction. meaning, if your backshaft speed is 0, you will have to hold the switch in the reverse position for 10 seconds before it will do anything.

i have also seen where the solenoid that controls this gets sticky in its bore, but definitly check the other 2 suggestions first.

We had the same problem and it was the oil building behind the plate with the three bolts described above. All dealer did was drill a small hole for the excess oil to drain and it never bothered again. Think of it as a breather on a one way cylinder that has a breather plug.

Thanks for the replies, looked at it this afternoon and yes Larry the dang wheel was loose the 10 second delay should protect the reverser from damage but my troubles aren't over I found when I was working on it that somehow the crew managed to either step on the sensor wire or snag it with something and it was unplugged, when the wheel was retightened and the sensor wire plugged back in as well as checking for oil build up it's still not working. ( did briefly however which may indicate a stuck solenoid)The only upshot is this happened with only 90 acres left and we finished our harvest with our 07 9660 today so I'll likely have to check the sensor wire for continuity or the sensor itself( hate JD pin connectors from my silage chopper experiences) and pull that piston apart and check for scoring damged O-ring etc. when I the combine goes through the shop this late fall or winter. By the way all excellent possibilities and I really appreciate the expertise.

Is that switch touchy as a common behavior. Used to a 9500 before, and a 9560 seems hard to get in neutral after using it before it tries to get back in forward gear. Not conciously going to far forward, but that's what I'm doing unless theres an adjustment somewhere to make a wider range of travel for switch???

If there's oil behind the reverser piston you should replace it along with the M8 bolt and sealing washer under the bolt. Be sure the bolt is correctly torqued. I've seen them fall out or break off.
