Just wondering how guys are timing roundup on wheat and durum to bring it in quicker? We try to wait till the majority of it is hard enough you leave a nail print in kernel. Sometimes I think we wait to long and the plant doesn't take it in tho? Have sprayed low green spots that would be too early according to agronomists and when combining I find those spots finished the their kernels just fine and were plenty big. Seems like a guy can spray earlier than they say?

It's not the kernals u should be looking at, the stem right under the head is where you need to judge timing.

The stem directly under the head dies, it turns color about three weeks before harvest.. That is when the plant is no longer feeding the kernals, that is when spraying could be done.

There was a north Dakota extension agent video, or pioneer video where a plant pathologists talked about round up timing.. When the stem below the head dies, the plant is done. Kind of like black layer on corn kernals... Once that happens you can safely spray it.

8850jd is right that part of stem is called the peduncle. When that changes color wheat can be sprayed with roundup since no more nutrients are being taken up.

The peduncle is quite close to actual seed colour, so you can judge for yourself when spraying or walking around without opening heads. As long as the peduncle is mature in colour, your fine.
