I'm sure if you could get enough lift, enough rear weight... it could possibly work...

Ground Speed would be minimal but gives your head more time to chop what's there, but is there enough power coming from the motor for a 12 row head, or big enough clean grain elevator?

the clean grain on these combines is not near enough for a 12 row. we cant elivate it fast enough. im afraid a 12 row would be a really bad deal for a 97. we also run a 6 row (we have an 8, but no planter). our 98 runs like a champ in 140 bushel corn at 6-7 mph. i guess what im trying to say is, you would cover no more acres by having a 12 row (besides cornering) so i am at a loss for why it would be economical to buy one. lemme know how it goes though, please!

I can't imagine why you couldn't run a 12 row head since they have the optional parts to beef up the header drive specifically for a 12 row. Obviously you couldn't go the same speed as with an 8 row but you are covering 1 1/2 times as much ground in each pass so if you dropped you speed 1 1/2 times you would cover the same ground. Basically from say 6 mph down to 4 mph. So what is wrong with that? Pretty sure a TR97 will go close to 4 mph with a 12 row unless in 200+ bpa wet corn. There is a possibility I am wrong though. There has to be several on here who have run a 12 row on a TR97 or the like.
