First check the splines on the auger for rust that would keep the auger from sliding all the way down. If the splines are clean did you remove the gearbox mounting plate from the bottom of the auger tube.
If the plate was removed and even if it were not removed it may not be allowing the gearbox to be in line with the center of the auger. I usually remove all the bolts attaching this plate to the auger except for two. I then move the plate around until the auger will slide down on the splines with the auger in the center of the tube. When you have it right the auger will slide down easily through the top bearing support without any effort to force it. It is not unusual to need to ream the bolt holes on the bottom plate to get the bolts back in.
