Thinking about making an upgrade. Currently have a '00 9650 walker, level-land with 2700 sep. hrs. in good shape, through the shop every year. Looking at a '09 9770 with 1000 sep. hrs., pwd, great maintenance record, autosteer ready, 4x4 feederhouse. Both are corn & bean machines. It is quite a size jump. What would be a good boot price??? Thanks!

A lot more then you will want to spend..
They offering you 60k or less for your machine and wanting 180k for Thiers?

The used market sucks... I would love to buy your combine, and really depends on the dealership.

I follow current values, and yours is worth around $45K, and most dealers
would want around $165K and probably more for the 9770.

Your walker machine is getting to be high houred, so that is tops.

At auction, you will find both for less than these prices I quoted.

In all honesty you would be gaining in productivity, but defiantly not in reliable and cost effective production..
If you can keep your walker machine . run it into the ground... She will not let you down.

I disagree. Less moving parts on the STS and the 50s are getting old and have their fair share on electrical trouble. 9770 is a solid machine and can be very reliable. Early 9650s also have an appetite for walkers as they did not have the strongest version.

A simple rule for trading is if you can trade wholesale for wholesale it's a no brainer. Wholesale on your 9650 would be roughly $35k and the 9770 about $115k. So if they are close to 80 difference I would do it.

I just bought an 09 9770 with 1350 sep hours that had very little repairs done to it yet. Most bearings and augers were original. It took $15k to get it ready to go. It will need 4-6k per season from now on if it gets 150-200 sep hrs per year.

If you are having trouble in wet soys remove the round bar concaves and install large wire ones.

I have a 9650 walker. Trade up! I also leased a 7230 this year. The 7230 would do all of 2 times the acres the 9650 would. Fuel per acre was less with the 7230. Thrashed better with less loss. All in wheat and barley. I ran a 9770 last year. Just not next to the 9650W. I only had one header at that time and couldn't find a second to run both combines. I would say it will also do 2x the production. Cost of repairs 2x on a 9770 per acre? I doubt it. I would say it will be similar to a bit more, per acre. You can put 2x the acres on it in the same amount of time. BTW, I had to park my 9650W in one variety of wheat. It did 3-4 bushel less than the 7230. Never could figure it out. After an hour or so of messing around I said park it. Easiest thrashing wheat I have ever cut. Vida.

Again in my experience a walker machine will always cost more money / acre in maintainence than a STS. Especially a later 70. The 50 series STS'so had week points. Any 70 with a 4x4 feederhouse or newer (2011??) are and will be my favorite machine. I've done enough work on both to back my views up. Needless to say I'd keep the 9650 and run it if you have to, because it's far to good of a machine to give away.

One option you overlooked was the high wear package.

I would not own one without it.
