The little plastic guides on the unloading auger drive chain keep on breaking and as a result the chain wears into the surrounding area around the chain. How tight should that chain be? The machine is running great and this is the only issue with it, I'll be on my third set is less than 200 machine hours. Anyone have and suggestions.

Definitely something not right. My book for a 740 seems to show the specs for chain tightness for maybe an older model...92mm on spring. My spring has a pipe around it. Chain tightness isn't critical IMO. Grab the chain and pull down, I think it should be pretty snug with some spring to it.

Not sure why your breaking chain guides. You sure they are installed right? One option is to replace guide with a chain sprocket and bearing. Let the sprocket support and guide the chain. I wouldn't utilize this method but it works for some things, like clean grain chain on a CIH 2388. They can jump off when running steep hills.

Another option would be a poly/UHMW chain guide. Many companies make them and they cradle the chain. They would be very robust for your application.

Really the simpliest would be find out why yours are breaking. Maybe there is a bigger problem....?

I don't really know what the bigger problem could be. The chain really walks around quite a bit. Does the top guide push up on the bottom of the chain and the bottom guide push down on the top side of the bottom part of the chain?

I suspect it might be time to bite the bullet, swallow, and replace the chain. We had similar issues last year with a chain that was noisy, broke a connector link, hard to tension uniformly. I suspected that the chain was getting due but was trying to limp to the end of the season when I'd have time to research a more economical source of O-ring #80 chain. Before we finished in a very difficult fall, I decided that combining hours were scarce enough that we didn't need a simple roller chain standing between us and completion.

Bottom line, new $gulp$ chain - runs super smooth and even, fraction of the noise, set tension and tensioner doesn't bounce around when the auger is engaged.

It kind of seems like the chain might need to be replaced. It is chewed up pretty bad from rubbing on the side of the machine without those guides on. How much would something like that cost?

Another thing to check would be to make sure the sprockets are all in alignment. Im not sure if this a new machine or not but if someone changed a sprocket it possible it could be too far on the shaft if it moved when they were banging the taper key in.

Holy smokes that's an expensive chain. Bought the machine new last year. Doesn't have alot of hours on it. I'll have to check out the entire drive system. It'd be nice if I could leave the auger running while getting out of the machine.

Is this the type of chain that is used, and to be honest I was shocked as to how little it cost and wonder where its made but anyway thought I would post it up for anyone's interest as $ 165.00 from the US for a ten foot roll is a steal if its any good as drive chain seems to be stupid expensive up here in Canada. By the way how long is the unloading auger chain ?

About a box and 1/2 of that, swag.

I spent 60$ on a short #60 grain auger chain the other day.

Yeah, for the price they charge for chain most places up here anyway in oil field country, sometimes I can go to the dealership and pay less even for the so called USA made 60 series JD drive chain ( not o ring chain ) . Anyway I imagine it would pay to do some digging and find out the qualities of o ring chain through suppliers other than just the dealer and may save a certain amount for the same or better quality chain.
