So, Toyota have been selling the V8 diesel in their 70 series Landcruisers for quite a few years now. I am still disappointed that the 1HZ inline 6 is not available, but that's the way things go.

What is everybody's opinion on them so far?

Should be long enough by now to know if they are any good or not.

I would like to hear all stories good or bad.

I know the oil filter is rather ridiculous and the starter motor is impossible to access, but don't know much more than that...........

We bought a 2008 model last august with 180k km on it. Ran beautifully within the 3 month warranty. Got informed at 200k service that some silly vacuum pump thing to do with the brakes needs replacing at over a grand. Brakes seem fine so it didn't get replaced.

Started having fuel issues which turned our to be 8 ****** injectors and 5000$ later she runs sweet until last night when the alternator fails. 3000$ for a new stupid ****ing water cooled alternator. Needless to say it will not be a bloody water cooled alternator that goes on.

I'm not impressed. Small things going wrong but cost of parts is ludicrous. Very difficult to like this thing at the moment. Wish we had bought a new ranger for not much more money at the time.

Bought a second hand 11 model for $40k, was thinking about a new Hilux or Amarok, glad I went the cruiser, would have destroyed the lighter Utes by now..love the V8 grunt, although it likes the juice, put heavier springs on the back, standard are too light when you carry a chest of tools and other stuff. I didn't think after market parts were that dear, did the brakes up for 5/8.
It's a pity they weren't just a little more modern in the cab, although sometimes the basic is nice, miss the keyless entree and central locking, don't even come standard with A/C, strange to get a standard Hilux with so much fruit yet the cruiser is still in the 90s
Apparently it's advised to put an extra fuel filter on. They are popular..

Ours has remote central locking and cruise control. Air con is not standard in a hilux either

Just talking to my mechanic brother and he said an extra filter will save the injectors. He said its a 12 hour job to replace the starter because it's in the V and all the injection has to come off. If you keep the V clean the starter should last a long time. He said they normally fail because the V fills with dust and mud.

Toyota should have stuck with the diesel inline six. Cheaper to build, cheaper to run, simpler to fix and I bet it is way more durable. Plenty of the sixes go to 500,000km before needing a rebuild.
I presume the reason for the eight was that the six wouldn`t pass emissions regulations?

OTOH The Petrol inline 6 was a complete turd...both gutless and thirsty...needed a long range tank to get to the mailbox!

Plenty around my area. And guess who has them?? Older farmers who think they are 18 again. All that unnecassary revving and noise. Pretty embarassing really.

Usual complaints:
Fuel consumption
Oil consumption
Dust getting thru filter
Wheels dont track in mud
Injectors
Resale now way as good as the RV 6cyl. Best ute they made.

And beware buyers. Most people claim they need it for towing. Well according to the latest RTA updates, you cant even legally tow a small auger with it........

Imo, those Toyota diesels are very welcome in North America. ........ sick and tired of those Fords, Cummins and Duramaxes.......(probably they still manage to keep them out,one way or another)
would buy a 1 ton dually Toyota Tundra with a diesel in a heartbeat! Heck, I would put a check on the dealers counter to get the "first" one

If your after a cruiser I would buy the V8. I have had 6s and V8 and there identical except the V8 has heaps more power. Both engines are terrible on fuel. Never had any issues with the V8 engine just regular services. Went back to a hilux dual cab, pretty boring but better to cart the kids around the farm and lot cheaper to buy and run.

Heard the same issues when I was in Australia. Am I not right in saying that the newer V8s have the same axle tracking? One of the V8s on the station I was on had some EGR issues and would occasionally go into limp mode, I think this may have been due its use on the road work crew that they also had where it regularly sat idling for an hour or more when the foreman was on the phone. I also heard complaints of the alternator positioning that leads to a lot of dirt and grit getting into it. Apart from that they do look tough!

Bought new V8 GXL 2 years ago, 40k so far, no issues. Fitted second fuel filter, is a must given injector replacement cost. Much superior for towing fuel trailers, comb trailers and other heavy gear than any 4 cylinders on market, even though they are "rated" to pull such loads.

bought one at gov auction, 40k km not mining and well less than half new price, has lifted suspension and is rough as guts without a load. just got to put a steel tray on it as the alloy trays are crap. heavy on fuel, probably due to gearing, we have the same motor but twin turbo and better gearing in our much heavier family car and it does around 12.5l/100, the ute would be 30% higher at a guess.

I wouldn't be worried about different track widths with the earlier V8s , any cruiser is pretty average in the handling department. I couldn't tell the difference between my 99 6 cylinder and my 07 V8. I have a bit of a soft spot for cruisers because like say a 904 kenworth you are buying a brand new 30 year old truck. They look good, are very solid and last forever it's just the fuel consumption is so bad that I could go on a pretty good holiday each year in fuel savings driving a hilux over the cruiser.
