Was out crop checking and noticed my large green lentils are thin on my hill tops.
This is on Sandy ground. I thought maybe it was too dry but after doing some digging I find there are lots that are curled up and not going up. There is no crust, just soft fluffy soil. They are packed in good. Seeded fairly deep 2" or a bit better.
The lower ground they seem fine.
Any ideas what's causing this?

I'd say pre em wash in..chem carry over should have affected the low spots as well to a degree...decent rain event after pre em on lighter land can be nerve racking...maybe the chem stuck in the sandy soil more....

Disappointing for sure...

Large greens 2 years ago, used heat and glyphosate preseed, then centurian(clethodim), dessicated with glyphosate.
Last year barley, used glyphosate for preseed, then occtain and acheive in crop.
this year glyphosate and heat preseed so far.

And no rain on the field this spring until last night had a little thundershower that maybe gave .25 inch

I would guess the Heat. Since I'm from the states I had to go look up the active ingredient. Same as Sharpen (saflufenacil) here. What rate did you use? It needs rain to activate so even a low rate may cause damage if there is no time to break down. My book here shows the plant back for lentil is 0 to 1 month (read variable). Microbial activity slows down if the soil is too dry so -> then less herbicide degradation.

any chance that the seed had been treated with pre harvest glyphosate? Its not the problem if only showing up in the hill tops but the way the plants are snaking around and not heading "up" is pretty classic glyphosate damage of the embryo

I would say not, these are from a field that I sprayed part of with reglone, and part with glyphosate. The seed came from the reglone part, I'm not saying its 100% but should be close.
