Hi all I have been growing Soybeans in east central Saskatchewan for around 6 years now and one thing I have noticed is beans really like shelter from the wind. The beans this year by shelter are twice as tall and have more flowers than the plants in the open field. Does anyone have any experience with providing shelter for the crop. I seen a trial in the states where farms are planting strips of corn in the bean field the corn is getting more sunlight and the beans are getting more heat. the problem with this is corn won't mature here. Has anyone tried anything else? My thinking is it might speed up maturity and increase yield.

Could the shelter thing be a factor that there is usually more moisture next to the shelter from snow trap and less evaporation due to less wind?

that's possible but this year we had close to 15 inches of rain in June and I have seen this effect in all the fields I had beans in

It's just a heat thing IMO. At the end of the year I don't find the beans with shelter yield any more.

Same by a creek bed with trees. Every crop thrives in those locations but often doesn't really yield more, just taller and fuller. My fababeans are twice the height by the trees but fewer flowers/pods at the moment.

X2. We burn or bale most cereal straw around here and you can sure tell the difference between the burnt and baled. I can't see it being very successful in zero till conditions or at the very least you won't be breaking any yield records.

I agree I have found 5 to 10 bushels a acre difference
