We have owned everything from the 20 series to the 50 series in deere 4wds and none of them were simple or easy to work on. Our 8440 went down the road yeaterday and that will be the last of those tractors I will ever own. The differences between the 60 series models was HP, Engine size and drivetrain. 8560 had an 8.1 L motor, 8760 had a 10.1 L motor, and the 8960 had an 855 Cummins in it. I believe the diffs were gradually beefed up as they gained size and HP. We owned an 8760 and it was a very good tractor, but we traded it when the 70 seaies came out. The 70 series main difference was they had the field cruise control witch is a very nice feature. As other people have said on here the older Stiegers and Versitiles were very powerful and reliable for the money. Hope this helps.

Correct me if I'm wrong 2388h, I believe the 8560 & 8570 had the trusty old 466ci (7.6L) engine in them, not the 8.1L, that was brought out in the 8000 series row crops, specifically the 8400 model. The 9100 & 9120 4wds had the 8.1L in them.

The 8960 had a 855 cummins in it? Thats fine, did it have a PT fuel system like the ol Big Cams? Im shure it would be newer than them! I know the Versitiles and Steigers were good and reliable, but they lacked in the cab, versatile any way, not shure on the steigers. I am just doing a bit of research now I really dont need a 4wd for 3 years, right now most of the farm is in crp. It just took 3 100+ hp tractors to keep up then I was looking at one bigger tractor as help has left since the good ol days. If I needed a 300 hp tractor today I go and get a Versatile they are common here. Steigers are around but not as common. I was just hoping to be able to get the tractor this year. Now if the 8960 ran a parts compatible engine to a 400 cig cam Id love that I already carry spare parts! I might just have to lok deeper into a 8960

If you really want a Deere, like another post here says, I'd also suggest an 8850 too. They're slightly bigger than an 8640 but are a far more robust machine. If the fuel pump is tweaked properly it'll run on the smell of an oily rag at the low revs and you won't be able to stop it (plus they sound far cooler than a straight six!). You can get so much hp out of them the rest of the drive train just groans but if you are sensible about it they are effortless horsepower with unmatched torque and hydraulic capacity before it's time.

The only disappointing thing about the 8850 is that Deere never had the intelligence to produce a powershift model with that V8 engine. When they did get around to a powershift (the 8960) it couldn't pull the skin off custard where an 8850 could pull the kitchen down!

That bold casting on the bottom of the block is pretty fancy mine says BIG CAM III, But yep nothing too fancy reliable as can be. The only parts ive found i had to stock is a starter. I wonder how a 8850 would work out with a big cam stuffed in it? Im still a fan of I-sixes.

I stand corrected on the smaller engines. I couldn't remember for sure when they went to the 8.1 from the 7.6. For the money I don't think you could go wrong with a PTA 325 steiger. Auto trans with a ton of power from the 3406 cat and I thought those cabs were pretty nice.

Let me help you with this quote Andy! :D

I always thought a 8850 with the Kinze conversion to a KTA1150 Cummins would have been the coolest tractor, especially a 600hp tractor with PTO, even cooler than a Big Bud 600/50. I wish I had seen one in person. Truly a work of art & I have no idea how they would get it to fit, only the magic mind of John Kinzebaw would know!

What engine came in the versatile 976, 946? I heard once they were big cams?
What is a versatile 895? Big cam in it it apears? Are they any good? Found a local one going almost too cheap! Can they be cranked up a bit? If i dont go Deere I wont spend much. I dont think deere are worth the higher prices, its just that deere is my best dealer locally. One call and its not oh let me look at the computer ill see if I can find that, its how much do you want to spend! Not real happy with Case Ih If I need planter parts its let me call you back..... computer is not working....always an exscuse. Dont take that as bashing Case IH thats a dealership problem. Actuially I think just about every manufacturer has its bests.

I was Looking a little deeper found a 875 versatile its at 250 hp It apears to have a big cam in it. I know you can get more Hp out of that engine did they use smaller trans / rear ends in these? can they handle 325, or 350 hp? big cam is all about changing the fuel.

I would take the cab of a 946/ 976 versatile over an 8960 any day. And you will be sitting in a 20k cheaper tractor.
I've never ran one of those old Versatiles before, but I was looking at them on Tractorhouse last night. What makes those cabs better than a 60-series Deere? Also, would you (or anyone else) happen to know when Versatile switched to the digital dash?

The 946/976 have the 855 cummins as do the old 835/875/895. When they went to the 876 they went to a 611 if memory serves. Also the 875 is rated at 280hp, I would think bumping it up to 325 to 330 would be ok, as long as your not pulling the bag off the tractor
