Yeah farmers don't get much love on the news even though our livelihoods affect the entire planet's well-being. And during high water events when they allow farmland to flood to save cities, it's a real slap in the face for those farmers affected. I guess it's a numbers game, both in terms of dollars, and also people affected. Since food is easily shipped from all over the worlds these days, sacrificing local farmers often is the cheapest thing to do. In short, you're not news because you're just one person or family.
And people think the dirt is still there after the water recedes, but they don't often realize the permanent damage done by severe flooding to the soil, to say nothing of the farmer's ability to farm due to lost machines, lost buildings, etc.
