Weak rear ends. Also the torque and clutch as you say. I never really realized what a rough riding son of a gun my 1086 was until I bought a Magnum.

 

Make sure it shifts decent as these were prone to shifting problems.

I think you got it T/A and the Clutch.

They do run really good. Start when its cold, -20 F saw my neighbor ether without being plugged in. But he said that 1086 always started good. His T/A was out by the way.

 

Had a 1086 awhile back. As other posters have said, T/A, clutch and rear end . Did the rear end twice in 5500 hours. That was enough.

 

Just make sure you get it cheap- because your going to have repair bills- we always had trouble with the A/C, along with all the others mentioned. I wouldn't give more the $10K for one if it was brand new.

you guys sure are hard on 1086s,guy said he has a 1586 already,ik lots of 1086s with 10,000 hrs round heret

 

Engines should be rebearinged often, high rev engine, seen 4000 hour wreaks.

 

If your looking for a cheap tractor under 12K they are a great buy. Not as bad as others make them out to be. IH sure sold alot of them if they were such big piles. Only weak point I see in them is the low hydraulic flow and the way they shift. The shifting issues can be easily and cheaply fixed. Other than that a decent tractor, and a good tractor for the money. Hard to find something that will run cheaper.

 

parts are cheap for those 86 series tractors Just put clutch ta in a neighbours tractor,heavy duty ta $900 and clutch$400. look good at the tractor pulls too.
