635F Header constantly speeds up unless holding down button

We've got a 635F header and a 9660 combine. On the last field of soybeans last year, we started having issues with the head. It would constantly speed up the head unless you held the down button. In that combine, the reel height and head speed is the same button, so this also meant the reel was as low as it would go. Would it be an electrical issue somewhere? An issue with the variable belt drive in the head? It worked fine after switching to the corn head.

There is a diverter valve in the combine multilink that routes oil to the platform reel lift when there is a mating coupler on the header side, or to the header speed when there is not (corn head)

Common failure. That diverter is stuck open allowing oil to go to both places. Replace that coupler and valve on the combine.

Yes. At least the older model combines have that vale on the single point, Rice may have a point about header type recognition and the combine swapping stuff elsewhere. Your 60 series combine will work just fine with a non-draper 600F. You just have a diverter valve stuck open. Ask your dealer where that valve is to be sure.

Check your pins on the single point to make sure none have broke, backed out, corroded, etc. If you lose your electrical header connection then it defaults to corn header and reel speeds up back shaft speed. Just something easy to check. Also you say you ran this header all last season without issue until last field? A flex is probably different than a draper electrically but I know to get a 600 series draper to work on a 60 series combine, you had to change command arm control pad and download new payloads into some controllers. Just saying if you had issues this might be something to check as well.

Yes, ran fine all last year until we hooked up at the last field, I will check the connectors and see. We have never run a draper on this combine, though I did have to replace one of the main controller boards before harvest last year, the one that deals with electrical signals going to the header. We had no power to the flex head height sensors and I traced it back to that board.

I'm sorry, I only come at this from a Troubleshooting side (I talk to lots of farmers/techs about combine problems for Headsight....and if anything like this does not work, its always "call the guys who made the electrical conversion first".....) I've never actually worked on one myself. I honestly can't see what ELSE it could be - the reel lift oil is going both places at once. Valve that switches between the two has got to be stuck open. I know a few guys simply put a 1/4 turn hydraulic valve in the hose to the feeder speed adjustment - and shut if off when running a platform....

Here is a snip from a 70 series manual....60 should be the same. The X14 cartridge in particular. Service Manual is VERY helpful....it says "remove & inspect; clean, repair or replace as needed!" It does remind service person to release pressure by holding reel down for 5-10 seconds before working on it!
