Looking for the perfect settings for cutting milo with a 70 series JD combine, fan, chaffer, sieve, clearance, and rotor speed. thanks very much

well, that depends on several factors. How wet is the milo? Yield? How much of the plant are u taking in? Certain varieties thrash harder as well. The book settings are a joke. My current settings in 130 bu 16% milo are 17 concave, 1050 fan, 800 cyl speed, 15 chaffer 8 sieve. using large wires in the front 2 and a round bar on the last one.

thank you very much shotime1. I am in central Kansas and I see you are in Kansas. The milo I am cutting is very similar to what you are cutting. Yes, the automatic settings are terrible. I will change my setting to match yours but I am using all three large wires and don't want to go through the troubles on changing 1 concave out but I guess I could if you thought it was very important. Right now having lots of software issues too and the sieve is not calibrated correctly which doesn't help matter out. I see your setting are close to the standard in the book except you are running a higher fan speed and cyl speed. Anyway if you have additional comments let me know but that very much.

Shotime1 nailed it with those settings. That's very close to what we run. Only I will pull evey other wire in last large wire concave. He is dead one about varietys thrashing different. We run a little slower speed on rotor if we are cracking grain. The DeKalb 37-07 is a hard thrasher and we will pull concave up to 8-10 for it.

Littlejohn, I seen your replies many of times on here. What model and etc of machine do you run? I had a 03 9750 and it caught fire and burned up. I now got an 09 9770 with 635F header with air. Can't calibrate the lower sieves right. Any tips and any other advice? Also how fast can I drive in 100 bu milo? thanks

Currently running 2 S680's and 40ft FD70 headers before them we had 9770's and ran a 670 for one year. Before we switched to green it was TR97's 98's 99's and CR9060's When you say you cant calibrate the sieve do you mean it wont complete it and save the setting or it calibrates and is still off? How do you have your separator closer plates set up and how many in ? I usually do a couple Killstalls and adjust from there to get sieves loaded evenly. Sometimes I will adjust the slides on the auger bed also to get things right. As for speed.... well depends how picky you are about losses. I would expect to run 3 to 4 mph in 100 bu. milo that has not frozen yet and do a really good job. After the freeze you can pick up a .5 to 1.5 mph.

Littlejphn, you have quit the operation. I have computer software issues and JD is coming out today to fix. I did get the machine set right for milo. I am happy with it. You really know what you are talking about. I can tell you have a lot of farming and cutting experience. You have some incredible machine now? One last question, do you feel the S680's are great improvement or did you buy them for the tax right off and the refrigerator? Thanks for all the info and the info on how fast to drive and how to adjust and etc. I have it adjusted by visual until JD fixes my calibration problems. I don't have any separator closer plates in, I thought they were only used for wheat. Thanks again Mr Littlejohn
