record breaking tests at NTTL on its triumphant return. Well...Probably not....but it "Be a lot cooler if they did"!

Maybe a parade or show. It's going to a peanut farmer around Lubbock, TX according to a poster over on TTT and he also took the photos. (Thanks Harri) Big Equipment did a fine job fixing up the ol girl. I think they made her nose bigger which is fine on a big bud. :)

No specs on tractor data. Fill us in on the details.
This is Glinz's old tractor which he resold back to Big Equipment Co. Their were posts here of it about 8 years ago.

It is a 160" wheelbase 650/50 with a Cummins QSK23 transplant rated at 950hp...that replaced the original Detroit 12V92. 85K lb Clark axles....the same as in the 747. Had the 75k before. Not sure what other integral mods...Twin Disc transmission has been upgraded...larger radiator...thus larger accomodating hood.

I'm guessing 900 or 950/42 or 46 tire??? Not sure.

Pretty schweeeet ain't she?

What does it weigh?
The 650/50 was 60 or 65k dry and max operable at 74K. This the larger axles and the big 23 liter Cummins. I'm sure in the 80-85k lb range and I maybe off in my guesstimate. Might be closer to 100Klb.

30+ year old tractor..I don't believe Big Bud is required to build around emissions compliance of today.

I wonder what that thing has in it for a tranny... That must be one monster of a Twin Disc! U-joints in that thing would be the size of a dinner plate.

Bruce
Far as I know it is a beefed up version of a 9 speed TD-2610 that they came with.

Another pic of the 950 and a pic from the 16V 747 rear axle when I saw it last summer in Iowa. The 950 supposedly has these in it now. It is ridiculous as well.

I looked at that thing a few years ago, shortly after it got the 23 litre engine and it was planting crop nearby on this side of the border. At that time I'm certain it had 32 inch wheels and I think they were a big logging tire, but I can't remember the width.

I would say by the photo, It now has larger rims and lower aspect ratio tires.
This is what it might have looked like then. Glinz still had it then. Right after the 1050 floaters in my avatar. They threw around the idea of tripples with those tires I believe.

For your operation is there that much return by having this 950 hp vs the 600 of normal comercial tractors...
Where a quad track is that much a waste of time for you, or have you had to build your own equipment to pull behind it?
8850.... I'm flattered, but I don't own that Bud or any other one. If so you would get daily vids of me pulling the largest Wilcox rippers and Big D discs.

The big question. Is what he will do with it? $300k or whatever is a bunch to spend on a museum tractor...but then again folks spend dumb money on art houses and cars. Hopefully he is a gracious enough farmer and would let a moron like me come see it. :D

I think I remember reading somewhere that the 85K axles added another 13,000 lbs to the weight, and by the numbers I have found the 23L cummins adds 2,000 lbs over the detroit. So I would say that your guess of 80K to 85K is really close. I would think to use all the power at normal field speeds (not the 10mph the prior owner was rumored to run!) that it would need to be around 95K.
Thanks flatlandbusa, I found the 6300lb vs. 4250lb, (Cummins & Detroit respectively). Wasn't sure on the axles. Good grief 13k.

Nice article....the two 740 models with the Komatsu 1413ci are turned up to 1000hp supposedly over in Bakersfield. They could use a refurbishment themselves.

I believe Ron could build some of these Super Buds again for scraper applications. Their are only a few of the 650s out there.

Did this dum ozzy see quite a few Buds at that dealers yard in the auto steer Vid? I thought Buds were as rare as rocking horse ****.

Thats tbe place in Havre, Montana (Big Equipment Co.) where they now refurbish and mod Big Buds and other makes. Besides everybody in Montana has a Big Bud. Like cactus in a desert there. :D

Who has Buds in Australia Madsnake?

Here's y'all Ozzy's own home grown Big Bud.....the Baldwin dp600.

years ago we stopped in at big bud to visit ron harmon and view some of the iron in place and under construction, i recall the side lift cab that allowed access to the drive and trans, and the short driveline between the clutch housing and trans. it was only 10 or 12 inches long with huge series 9 mechanics style u-joints. they originally tried tubing in the connection, but it did not survive, ron showed me how they had purchased used rail wheel assemblies with the solid chilled iron wheels and shaft, they cut out a section of the shaft and machined it to accept the u-joints and milled in the locating spline and drilled and tapped for the bolts, a lot of iron no doubt. they were also trying to develop scrapers for mining that were 16 foot wide. they pulled 3 in a train and if i remember correctly they were 30 yards struck volume each. they were trying for open pit coal mining, and i am quite sure the friggstads had some involvement with this project also. they would load they rearmost scraper first and continue forward to the front. lots of weight and hp needed for this and thus why some of the biggest units were originally produced..
Appreciate the story..... The legend was, according to the Vol 2 history of 4wds the 650/84 Bud made anything Cat had in the scraper world a joke. Bring on the Super Buds.

wonder when Universal hobbies are going to produce a 1/16 high detail 525/50

love BIG BUDS all time fav tractor.
Not sure on 1/16, almost as sketchy as building real new Big Buds in this economic climate.

They are coming out with high-detail 1/32 models, 3 variations of the 525/50.

They need a 650/50 in 16th or 32nd.

I have 1/16 650/50 that was made in S. Africa Just sayin. I never can get enough toy buds as they are way cheaper than the real ones. I was going to college in Havre when the Williams Bros. brought the 747 back home and was able to see it as it was getting fixed up. All I can say is it was quiet awesome. I enjoy reading ur post on the buds. Keep Up the Good work
Thanks....

Yes...a S. Beneke/M. Fast 650 or 740 Big Bud would be a keeper for value.

Saw the 747....in Iowa.. i say....heck....build another one Ron. :D

Here is a rare Series IV 450 with N14 Cummins for sale on Tractor House @ Big Equipment with that big price. Maybe the cart behind is included. :) Nice unit though.
