I'm not guna say ours are the best because I don't wana open up the can of worms and start a big argument, lol, but we use JD 5020's and 6030's on ours, 4020 if we get in a pinch, augers are westfield 13x91 and 13x111. We don't have remote mount controls on them and this point but it is definately something we want to add.

 

We use a Case 2090 on a 10x70 Farm King. No remote mount controls either. Seems to work well for us.

 

We use a old 2-150 white with a remote throttle and the control for the PTO is right in the back with a vice grip clamped on to it works good for us. Nothing fancy but it works ... dont have to worry about scracthing it ...

We use a 13-85 farm king.

We use an allis chalmers 7040 or 7060, can't remember whichone it is, its around 140 hp. Its the only tractor on our farm that isn't green in four generations. We use it on a 13x70 farm king. Our 4230 was a bit shy on power. The allis runs it a bit better but you can still kill it. The only reason we bought it was that it was cheap, its hard to find an older tractor in the hp range with as 540 shaft, and it also had triple hyd's which we need on the auger. We also bought a remote start for it and throttle control which works great on it. Actually we just leave that tractor on the auger year round and it never really gets unhooked.

 

New Holland T5050, Case 1170 Turbo, and occasionally if we need the 3rd auger a 2675 massey, all seem to serve their purpose. I like the T5050 as the Pto control is on the back, just wish the throttle and key were back there too.

 

jd 3020 on a 10" x70' auger....bit primative but being able to start everthing while standing on ground saves time

 

JD 4450 on a 12X92 feteral. Can be started and ran off the ground and it has a good cab and heater for moving on the cold days, or the 4020 if we are in a pinch.

 

Case 2290, or JD 4240 on 13x70 Farm King. Case is much easier on fuel so it usually gets the nod.

 

9030 New Holland Bidirectional 105hp. You can reach all the controls from the ground, and its really handy to set up to a bin as well. Running a 12x70 spray air right now

 

We use the 8440. It's usually the only tractor not doing anything at the time.

Is there really a "best" for the job?

 

JD 630 on a 7 inch x 60 foot Cardinal. Woo Hoooo, I win!

Umm, I don't always do it like that, but it cool for the retro crowd.

 

I use my JD 2520 (27 hp) on my batco 15 x 85 conveyor, handles it well at 14-1500 rpm
Looks funny with a little yard tractor hooked up to an 85 foot conveyor though.
I don't use it for moving it as I thought the hitch weight would be too much but it is very convenient for reaching pto and throttle control from the side as there is no cab.

 

Mustard, I believe you, but you must not fill that auger. Seems no way 27 hp would run a 15 inch. If so, wow!

 

we use a 2470 case on a 13x71 westfield its nice we did put controles on the back we run a 1000 to 540 adaptor then we can run the engine at around 12-1300rpm

 

we run either a IH 3388 or CaseIH 7120 it runs a sakundiak 10 x 45

 

Mustard, I guess that points out the difference between a belt conveyer and an auger.

I wonder what the relative capacity of a 15 inch auger and a 15 inch belt conveyer are. I know the belt conveyers are likely to be a lot easier on the grain than an auger, but if you didn't really care about that (all corn for example), should you choose one over the other?

 

If you want just a auger tractor and you disregard operator comfort and cab quietness and focus on just reliability, power, & fuel. Deere is reliable and their older models make really good power but they are a dog on fuel compared to a Case which might be the way to go. I'm thinking of tractors built in the 80s, anything newer like in the 2000s does to a good job on an auger, better cabs, loaders, hyd, and just overall nicer to operate but really a $70,000 auger tractor doesn't make sense unless you have some other real work for it.

 

We generally use a couple 2290 Case 2wd's on Farm King 13 X 70 and 10 X 70 's. This summer we put our IH 584 (52 1/2 HP) diesel on the 10 X 70, it is still on there, even through the crappy fall and early winter.
When we have a 2290 on the 10X70 we run it with 1000 PTO using a 540 reducer and run engine at 1550 rpm. Very easy on fuel.
Used to run a Brandt 8 X 52 supercharged with a MM U gas, had good road speed .

 

We use a JD 2940, with not cab. You can reach everything from the ground. Pretty easy. Prolly not the best.

 

are u running it full? how many hp is that tractor? How can u run it at 1300 engine rpm? we have the same auger and it takes a full 140 horse on tough grain into a big bin.

 

I like my 285 Massey with big rubber. When we had ordered the big rubber at the time, the benefit is this thing will do about 30mph down the road if you dare so nice for moving. No cab so easy to start and grab controls from the ground. Also a short wheel base that turns real sharp so easy to maneuver the auger under bins for unloading as well.

 

JD 5300 on a 8 X 52 westfield. Controls are very handy.

 

My best auger tractor is anything easy to start, falls are cold and many of my bins are in the field. Here a cab is nice. I use a a 2-180 white. Overkill but it starts and is warm when i move.

We use a 1066 ih on our 10 x 61 westfiel. We do go retro sometimes and pull out our W4 but pretty hard on gas. Handle's it alright though.
