CIH 2020 Grain Head Calibration Fault

I've tried numerous times to calibrate a new to me 2020 grain table to use on my 8230. It always comes up with a Left Sensor fault code 113, which the Manual agrees with the Monitor as being the left sensor. I sprayed electronic cleaner on all the Connecters involved. It said something about it being 5 volt too. I was never able to successfully calibrate my Drago corn head height sensors last fall either. If I recall, it had basically the same fault issue, not sure tho.
What is the likelihood that it's in the combine harness and not the header harness or sensor? What Ohm meter readings should I get testing the header sensor itself and which prongs on the sensor connector pack do I connect to??
Whew, I hope this makes sense and thanks for any help!!
PS: This combine and headers are new to me since late last fall. I used the corn head manually and this summer I cut oats with it in the manual locked-up position. I would like to buy a draper head but decided to try the 2020 out 1st. It has an Air Reel, otherwise I wouldn't consider it on beans but I've had decent success with a 1020 w/Air Reel on my 2577. I'm almost fearing that I spend a LOT on a Draper head only to find that the Combine is the problem??

Its easy enough to diagnose on these combines if you know the procedure. Since you also have a Drago header, which would have our (Headsight) sensors, I am attaching our CIH Flagship combine manual.

Go to page 17 on how to read the sensor voltages in the combine.

Page 11-13 talk about header setup & operation.

Now, for your 2020 OEM head, things are a bit different than in the manual.
  1. Your header select should be Type: Grain, Sub-type: FLEX
  2. Sensor voltages should be roughly as follows:
    1. Left - 1.0V sitting on ground, 4.0V off ground
    2. Right - 4.0V sitting on ground, 1.0V off ground
    3. Sensors must never be < 0.5V, or > 4.5V
How to tell if you have a combine or header problem - start here:
  1. Disconnect the header plug, Sensor voltages should all drop to 0.
  2. Connect the header again. Anything except 0 on the combine diagnostics likely means a header problem.
If your left sensor input is reading 0 in the combine diagnostics with head connected, how to determine if you have a combine problem or a header problem is still fairly straightforward - but you will need a DVM.
  • Backprobe pins 1 & 2 at the header connector. 1 (dead center on plug) is Left Height, 2 (right above it) is Right.
  • If you don't have backprobes, a paperclip opened out works pretty well.
  • Measure to a chassis ground - the voltages should be the same as above.
  • If the voltages are correct at the plug, you have a combine problem; if not, you have a header problem.
  • Note: in all the years I've been doing this I've rarely seen a combine wiring issue.
Please feel free to post your results on here, I check daily and will try to help further if needed.

Pro-Tip: After calibratiion (once it works), lower head almost completely, and set #1 Height point at that very low height. Check to see if you have "wavy line". If so--bump up height to desired position. This trick helps in getting the combine to shift into AHHC (wavy line) mode.

I think I have problems with the Combine header connections itself as even having wired in a power connector to plug 29 the Insight doesn't power on. I went back to the feeder house to see if there is any voltage there. There wasn't any power there either. When I do the Header calibration attempts ii says E-0057-04 Shorted to low source. It has different codes for different Sensors but they all say "Shorted to low source" and when I tap on diagnostics it shows Zero voltage on the graphs. could there be a blown fuse somewhere??

OK. THis could be several different things. A bad computer module, a bad fuse, or a shorted wire, even a bad Insight.

Let me clarify that the OEM sensors on the 2020 and the Insight on the Drago actually get power from different places. Or do you have an Insight box on the 2020??
  • If no Insight, the 2020 gets 5V sensor power thru the combine plug on pins 5 & 23.
  • The Insight box gets 12V power from the added power wire connected into the feeder speed sensor.
I suggest this first - Grab a voltmeter, unplug the connector from the header, and (motor running) check to see if you have 12V on pin 29 of the combine plug. Also check that pin 30 is ground (measure from 29 to 30). If you do NOT have 12V on that pin, then we need to start there - go back up and check at the feeder speed sensor plug.

If you do, now check pin 5 & 23. Both pins should have 5V on them. If not, then we have a combine 5V supply issue that needs to be tracked down. These supply voltages come right from the CCM1.

It can be hard to further troubleshoot w/o knowing what you have on the header.

For an OEM wired 2020 header w/o Insight
  • Reconnect the header
  • Measure to see if you have 5V on A or C at either sensor. If not, examine header wiring for short circuit.
For a header with Insight box
  • Does the Insight box come on (LED, screen)?
  • If not - first unplug all sensors or disconnect conversion harness from OEM header
    • Does Insight box come on?
    • If so, check wiring on header for shorts
    • If not -
  • Unplug connector from bottom of Insight (allen head bolt).
    • Test for 12V. Measure pin 4 in plug - should be 12V. If not, check continuity of wire to pin 29 on plug to combine.
    • Test for Ground. Measure across pin 4 to pin 6 in plug - should be 12V. If not, check continuity of wire to pin 30 on plug to combine.
  • If you have 12V on the Insight plug - assume bad Insight box.

Thanks for the detailed process!! I'll check it out step by step and post back on my findings. The 2020 is OEM. I have 2 different Drago's and both have Insights and neither one has ever Powered on. Pin 29 was blank , so that is why I added the add-on harness to provide power to the Insights. So far, I haven't succeeded in finding any "juice".
