I've been wondering if anyone has done this? It seems to me it would work, but don't think i want to try it and then the gps does something crazy.
all i know is i don't want to be the one that runs over a 40ft draper, and offer up a weak "it was the gps"
so i was just wondering if the gps would work safely like this, so i could fill the cart more completely while not having to worry about other things.

thanks, Trent

I have heard of people doing it we are going to try it this fall and all you need to do is make sure you have the same heading as combine . Example combineing at 90 degrees set cart to 90 degrees and and all i have to do is snap a new line when under combine spout and engage

We use autosteer every time with the cart. Use the exact same line as the combines. With our 35ft headers and long augers (JD),the tractor is merely set (offset) 51 inches to the right. We just pull up to the combines and hit resume, and keep a steady speed on the tractor. We let the combines adjust speed or auger to fill the cart. No spills or drama.

Is this with the free satellite signal? Has the GPS caused any close calls? I was kind of thinking of programming it to one of the smallest toolbar width setting so it wouldn't "snap" very far and then I would just worry about alignment once at the beginning of a unload and I wouldn't have to worry about a full cart at that point.

We tried it with outback system and JD system. Set the tractor (outback system) to 90 heading and after a few times it would start trying to find the line from in the spring seeding and get very close to the combine

So do you engage behind the combine and then pull up? I like to sit facing the combine and then time it so i do a quick u-ball and avoid the majority of the combine dust, and am worried about when the GPS locks on that it wont do something dumb like it has when harrowing, veering me off course, (maybe poor satillite or setting:confused:) but i do NOT want that crap happening when im a few feet from a 40ft flex:eek:

I guess the best time to try would be beside a pickup header, that would sure make night driving easier:)

When I'm on the cart I always use auto steer. I just hit the re mark button when I'm in line then it's good. You never know when combine driver has reset the line
Mbfarmers idea of setting to 1' would work great just be inline perfect before engaging and your set.

We do it all the time with a JD 9330 tractor & four 9870 combines, they are all on SF1. Just the way our augers and everything works when the combines are picking up a swath I can go from one combine to the next without shifting. Just set the cart tractor to the same implement width as the combines. I would not recommend doing it with the free WASS signal, too much drift. With our SF1 I am totally comfortable within a foot or two of our combines heads, don't even think about it any more. We usually have more screwups without autosteer:rolleyes:

Trimble uses true north for correction while Deere uses magnetic north I believe ( it maybe the other way around) thus the degree difference.

Alex I heard the jd use magnetic nth and everyone else used true nth. Bit how does that work when magnetic nth moves around every year? Must have something worked into it.
I've been doing gps on grain carts for while now. No problem at home as same brand on rtk. But when I'm contract/custom harvesting we have 3different size machines on different brands as well as cart. Found it best 1 person does 1st cut then others copy. Works out great. Even though on free to air. Just make sure grain cart engages/nudges either behind or in front of combine so its not snapping online next to header. Makes cart and combine driving so much less stressfull.

Trimble does do it, you require the FMX displays and a wifi (DCM) modem. You can see the other vehicles without issue and warns you when the other vehicle is on the same line as you so multiple combines can wireless transfer autoguidance lines and yield data and can actually do fleet tracking with these modems as a small fee service.

It works and the only real big cost is the displays

We have FMX on the combine and cart tractor, both RTK, when we first set it up we transferred all lines to both displays, then put both machines in the field, engaged combine and let it lock on its line, then manually drove cart tractor into position and checked offline distance, then entered a left offset, causing the cart to always be right of the line, directly under the auger, moth machines are using the same swath width, at night and in dusty conditions there is little to worry about, works on curves, contour lines, and a-b lines.
